Student answer (Band 6.5)

Food , shelter and clothing are the basic necessities for humans. Scarcity of either can be really brutal for anyone in the world irrespective of which corner of the world they reside in.

Clothing is something I would like to focus on in this article. Research indicates that there are some parts of the world where people buy far too many clothes. If we really think about it, there has to be reasons behind people doing this in some parts of the world and not in the other. For Example , I visited Paris last summer and I was stunned to see how people dress up there even on regular weekdays and while I was sipping a coffee outside, I felt like I am watching a fashion parade . Well honestly, I should not have ben surprised as I was in the fashion capital of the world.

Likewise , I have a very close Indian friend and while I was sharing my Paris experience with her, I got to know something even more interesting about India and its culture. I was told that people in India buy new clothes for every occasion or festival in India and this is a part of its tradition and culture. I know India has several festivals almost every month and knowing the population of India, I could do the math and realized, why clothing industry would be so popular in countries like India.

In my opinion , there is nothing wrong in buying new clothes and staying up with fashion and living with confidence , however we should also realize that this is a socio-economic cycle and more and more clothes we buy in name of tradition or excessive fashion, there are people in the world who cannot even afford a single pair of clothing.

The solution here is, firstly to create awareness among people regarding using the resources to optimum and secondly, inventing clothing that might serve dual purpose. I recently came across a company from Korea that manufactures pants that can be worn either as pants or can be folded to make them shorts. This definitely is need of an hour as single piece of clothing can satisfy two purposes, saves closet places and is also easy on pockets.

I would recommend people to look at manufactures like this and also would like more and more brands to consider and encourage detachable and flexible clothing so that our resources can be used appropriately and people will automatically not buy excessive clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for excessive clothing consumption and solutions to reduce it. The ideas are relevant, such as cultural traditions and fashion trends as reasons, and the suggestion of versatile clothing as a solution. However, the development is somewhat anecdotal. For instance, the focus on personal experiences in Paris and India takes up a significant portion of the essay, which limits the depth of the analysis regarding the broader global context. To reach a higher band, you should balance personal anecdotes with more general, analytical arguments about consumerism and global marketing strategies.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Likewise', 'In my opinion', and 'firstly', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly abrupt, such as the jump from the Paris anecdote to the Indian cultural example. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally slightly unclear, and the paragraphing could be more refined to ensure a smoother flow between the problem and the proposed solution. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'socio-economic cycle', 'necessities', and 'detachable'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'doing the math' (which is informal) and 'need of an hour' (which should be 'the need of the hour'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the overall range is somewhat limited, and some phrasing feels slightly repetitive or simplistic. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid overly conversational expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I felt like I am watching' (tense inconsistency), 'should not have ben' (spelling/typo), and 'more and more clothes we buy... there are people' (awkward structure). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are instances of unnecessary spaces before commas. The majority of sentences are understandable, but the frequency of minor errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tenses would be beneficial.
