Student answer (Band 6.0)

In certain parts of the world, people like to purchase a lot of clothes. There could be various reasons for that like quick changing fashion trends and people having abundant resources which turns them towards consumerism.

Firstly, some countries are fashion leaders of the world, which means that they lead the fashion trends and generally, people of these countries are really excited to try new fashion designs. They have fashion shows every season with a new line of clothing. People of these countries tend to be very fashion forward and enjoy buying new clothes which aligns with latest fashion ideas. For example, in countries like France, America and Japan, it can be easily noticed on streets how people like to keep up with the latest trends.

Other reason could be that people of some countries have abundant resources and they already have their basic needs fulfilled like food, electricity and shelter. Given the excess money, they have the option to buy more clothes than they actually need.

These people should be discouraged to buy so many clothes as it is a waste of resources. They should be taught about concepts like minimalism where you can be happy and content with lesser stuff. In minimalism, people actually feel a deeper sense of fulfilment by purchasing less items like clothing, as they do not have to think about what to wear and they spend less time in decision-making.

In conclusion, there are a lot of reasons to buy more clothes like ever changing fashion and increase in consumerism, but it can be managed if people are taught about concepts like minimalism which can help them feel content with less commodities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for excessive clothing consumption and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the influence of fashion trends and the impact of disposable income. However, the development is somewhat limited. While the points are clear, they lack depth and specific, detailed examples. For instance, the discussion on minimalism is a good suggestion, but it could be expanded with more concrete examples of how this could be implemented on a societal level. The position is clear throughout, but the overall development remains at a fairly general level, which prevents it from reaching the higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Other reason', and 'In conclusion' are used to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to create a more natural, sophisticated connection between ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'consumerism', 'minimalism', and 'commodities'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing (e.g., 'people like to', 'a lot of'). To achieve a higher score, the student should incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a more flexible and sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is consistently clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'Other reason could be' (missing an article) and 'purchasing less items' (should be 'fewer'). The punctuation is generally correct, but the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. The majority of sentences are error-free, but the lack of variety in sentence construction and the presence of minor errors keep the score in the 6.0 range.
