Student answer (Band 7.5)
It has been observed that purchasing new clothes and having the latest fashion is becoming widespread across the globe. This essay will discuss how this is largely attributable to social media pressures and the production of non-sustainable clothing by companies. Later, it will propose advocating for sustainable fashion as a worthy solution to this grave endemic.
To being, influencers, through social media platforms, promote following the latest trends in the world of fashion. Consequently, peer pressure forces many individuals to buy the clothes and accessories which are new and trending, to fit into the norms of a modern society. As fast-fashion changes on a monthly basis, many feel compelled to quickly buy more clothes. Coupled with the clothing brands utilizing fiber which breaks down easily, may find it justifiable to over-purchase clothes. To put this into perspective, many online stores such as Shein not only launch new clothing lines every month, but are also notorious for making polyester dresses which do not survive more than a handful of washes.
A plausible remedy for this growing concern is the promotion of outfits made of strong fibers, through public awareness. To achieve this, careful selection of cotton and other durable materials should be heralded by celebrities to change the public's opinion. Moreover, the longevity of these clothes should be given prime importance by those who lead fashion decisions across the world. For example, if a well-renowned designer creates a line aimed at being bio-friendly and long-lasting, then admirers of his designs would consciously prefer durable outfits. Only then can the masses be convinced that changing clothes every month is not ideal.
In conclusion, over-consumption of dresses stems from the promotion of fast-fashion by media and brands who prefer cheap and fragile materials, and create a sense of urgency with following the recent trends. Only through public awareness and campaigns to opt for fibers based on their longevity, can this issue be tackled.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both the reasons for over-consumption (social media, fast fashion, and poor material quality) and potential solutions (public awareness and promoting durable materials). The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are well-supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of Shein and the role of celebrities. The development is logical, though the explanation of how 'fiber which breaks down easily' leads to over-purchasing could be slightly more explicit in terms of the consumer's psychological motivation. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons from the solutions. Cohesive devices such as 'consequently', 'coupled with', 'moreover', and 'in conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. The progression of ideas is smooth, and referencing is generally clear. There is a minor awkwardness in the opening phrase 'To being', which should be 'To begin', but this does not significantly disrupt the flow of the text. The overall structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and demonstrates a good range, including terms like 'attributable to', 'endemic', 'plausible remedy', and 'bio-friendly'. The student successfully uses topic-specific language related to fashion and consumerism. There are a few minor inaccuracies, such as using 'endemic' to describe a social trend, where 'phenomenon' or 'issue' might be more precise. However, the range is sufficient to convey complex ideas with precision. The word choice is varied enough to maintain interest and demonstrate a level of sophistication suitable for a high band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, including conditional sentences ('if a well-renowned designer creates...') and participial phrases. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are a few minor slips, such as the initial 'To being' and the slightly awkward phrasing 'may find it justifiable', where the subject is missing. However, these are non-systematic and do not impede communication. The control over punctuation and sentence construction is strong, reflecting a good command of English grammar.
