Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is undeniable that growing number of people are purchasing significantly more clothes than ever due to ease coming from sales and online shopping. However, there are some certain reasons behind it, and I will explain these reasons in the upcoming paragraph.

There are many compelling reason why plethora of individuals are buying clothes more than their capacity. To commence with, nowadays, online shopping has became a trend and it is very comforting to buy clothes compared to past when one needs to travel far just to buy clothes. In fact, these companies deliver their clothes to their home. As a result, people are buying more clothes. Secondly, social media has become a trend in these days and people are wearing various clothes just to post their pictures as story or post. Hence, these are some notably reasons why people are buying more outfits.

To mitigate this challenge, I believe there are a few things we can do to reduce the process of more buying attires. Firstly, the government needs to raise awareness of how much things are used in order to make a new attire. For example, how much liters of water need to make one shirt or one pant. Furthermore, the government can also impose more tax on cheap clothes which can lead to cut down on the numbers. Lastly, stores can also give some discount for the repairs on old outfit which will encourage people to buy less clothes.

Taking everything into consideration, people are purchasing clothes due to heavy marketing, advantages of online shopping and its frequent sales, and government needs to take some certain steps to slow down buying rate of the clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, exploring both the reasons for excessive clothing purchases (such as online shopping and social media trends) and proposing solutions (like government awareness campaigns, taxation, and store repair discounts). The position is clear throughout the essay. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed and would benefit from deeper extension and more specific real-world examples. For instance, the discussion on social media trends is brief and could be expanded to explore the psychological pressure of fast fashion culture. Nevertheless, the main task requirements are met with relevant ideas presented. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors, as all parts are addressed though some could be fully elaborated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall arrangement with a traditional four-paragraph structure comprising an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to link sentences and paragraphs, such as 'To commence with', 'Secondly', and 'To mitigate this challenge'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in repetitive phrasing like 'has become a trend' and abrupt transitions. Additionally, the conclusion introduces a new idea ('heavy marketing') rather than simply summarizing the main points. These features indicate a solid Band 6 performance, where logical progression is present, but cohesive features are occasionally mechanical or slightly flawed.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'plethora', 'mitigate', and 'impeach' or 'impose'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and word formation throughout the text. Examples include 'growing number of people' missing an article ('a growing number'), 'ease coming from' instead of 'convenience of', 'reason' instead of 'reasons' after 'many compelling', 'has became' (tense error), 'notably reasons' instead of 'notable reasons', and 'liters of water need to make' instead of 'liters of water needed to make'. Despite these lexical errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms and agreement, such as 'online shopping has became', 'one needs' versus 'companies deliver', and 'how much liters of water need to make'. Punctuation and articles also show regular lapses, such as missing articles before singular countable nouns ('shirt', 'pant'). While these errors do not impede overall communication and the reader can easily follow the argument, the frequency of non-systematic errors prevents the essay from reaching a Band 7, making Band 6 a fair and accurate reflection of the grammatical control shown.
