Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the contemporary era, it is frequently observed that people these days are purchasing clothes more than they required. This shift is mainly due to mass production and fashion trend influenced by well-known people. However, to encourage people to buy less clothes can be done by providing them information about financial literacy.

To commence with, the primary reason for this development is that clothes are being manufactured in surplus quantity. To explain, material required to prepare attires are quite affordable; owing to this, businesses produce the clothing in large amount which allows them to sell products at a highly discounted price. As a result, people buy clothes in bulk to save some money. Furthermore, the fashion trend keeps on changing from time to time. This is because people follow the example of the actors and well-known people they admire, thus buying everything they see on social media platforms without considering if they actually need that attire or not.

Nevertheless, people need to be taught the importance of finances. To explain, indvidual need to understand that unneccessary expenses should be avoided at any cost to save money for the future or in case of any emergency. Thereby, they can be ready for any kind of circumstances life throws at them. If a person has significant amount of finances saved up in their account, they might be able to invest it in real estate or help pay for any kind of medical emergency.

In conclusion, although impluse buying of clothes has its own reasons such as increase in production and ongoing clothing trends, people should be provided with information on saving money for the future rather than spending out of thier budget.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, exploring both the reasons for excessive clothing purchases—such as surplus manufacturing, affordability, and the influence of celebrities and social media—and how people can be persuaded to reduce this consumption through financial literacy education. The position is clear throughout the essay. The ideas are generally relevant and supported with explanations, such as mentioning how discounted prices and fast-changing fashion trends encourage bulk buying. However, the development of ideas remains slightly superficial and could be extended further with more detailed examples or elaboration. For instance, the solution part focuses on saving money in general rather than specific strategies to deter clothing consumption. Consequently, the response aligns best with the Band 6 descriptors, as all parts of the task are addressed, but some ideas are slightly under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, ensuring that the progression of ideas is fairly easy to follow. Cohesive devices are employed to link sentences and paragraphs, such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'Nevertheless'. However, some cohesive choices or referencing are a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'To explain' to introduce supporting points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate reasons from solutions and the conclusion. Overall, the organizational structure is sound, supporting a Band 6.5 level, though slightly more flexible and varied cohesion would be required for a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, including terms such as 'contemporary era', 'mass production', 'surplus quantity', and 'financial literacy'. There are some attempts to use less common items like 'impluse buying' (which contains a minor spelling typo for impulse) and 'indvidual' (individual). Some word choices are slightly awkward or imprecise, such as 'clothes are being manufactured in surplus quantity' or 'attires' used as a countable noun ('prepare attires'). However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding communication. These characteristics place the response firmly at the Band 6 level for Lexical Resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('If a person has significant amount of finances saved up...') and relative clauses ('...well-known people they admire'). There are several noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('people these days are purchasing clothes more than they required' instead of 'require'), article omissions ('material required to prepare attires', 'in large amount'), and minor spelling mistakes ('unneccessary', 'thier'). Despite these errors, the sentence structures remain reasonably clear, and communication is rarely impeded. The control of grammar and punctuation fits the Band 6 descriptors well.
