Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying reasons for excessive clothing purchases, such as heavy discounts and marketing, and suggesting solutions like second-hand options and taxation. The position is clear throughout the essay. However, some ideas lack deep extension and rely on brief explanations or generalisations, such as the unsupported assumption regarding Germany's tax laws. Despite minor underdeveloped sections, all prompt requirements are adequately covered, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor for addressing the task with relevant ideas, though some parts could be more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay presents a clear logical organisation with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'First and foremost'. However, paragraphing and referencing occasionally feel slightly mechanical, and logical links between sentences can be abrupt. For instance, the transition into the example about Germany lacks smooth integration. Overall, the arrangement provides a coherent structure that is easy to follow, fitting comfortably within the Band 6 criteria for a coherent overall arrangement with some faulty or mechanical cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'presentable', 'marketing campaigns', and 'alternative options'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'heavly' instead of heavily, 'merketing' instead of marketing, 'tempt' instead of tempted, 'reparing' instead of repairing, 'warn iteams' instead of worn items, and 'insted' instead of instead. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to Band 6, where spelling errors are characteristic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical errors and punctuation slips present throughout the text. Examples include sentence fragments and awkward phrasing such as 'Because people are becoming financially broke and not able to afford...', which disrupts grammatical completeness. While these errors occur regularly, they rarely impede overall communication, placing the response squarely at Band 6 for a mix of structures and some grammar errors that do not hinder understanding.
