Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, providing clear reasons for why people buy too many clothes and suggesting viable solutions to reduce this trend. In the introduction, the writer outlines affordability, advertisements, and social media influence as the primary causes, and proposes awareness and distribution/recycling as solutions. These ideas are expanded upon in the body paragraphs with examples such as celebrities and influencers. However, some arguments lack deep extension, placing the response solidly in the Band 6 territory. For instance, the explanation of how garments affect 'mother nature earth' is somewhat superficial. Nevertheless, the position is clear throughout, and all parts of the prompt are addressed adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs covering reasons and solutions respectively, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the sentence structure in the opening paragraph ('individuals purchasing the large sum of clothes... even they do not have') creates awkward links, and punctuation errors around transitional phrases (e.g., comma splices or missing full stops) affect the overall flow. Progression is visible, but paragraph internal cohesion requires smoother integration to reach a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student attempts a range of vocabulary suitable for the topic, including terms like 'contemporary era', 'environmental organizations', 'awareness campaigns', and 'garment production'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'the large sum of clothes' instead of 'large quantities of clothes', 'on low prices' instead of 'at low prices', and 'allure's people' containing a punctuation error. Words are also occasionally misused, such as 'to minimized this trend' (minimise) and 'motive people' (motivate). These errors do not seriously impede communication, reflecting the characteristics of a Band 6 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several run-on sentences and comma splices, such as 'The main reasons behind this trend is that the affordability of garments, advertisements and the social media influence.' Subject-verb agreement errors are also present, such as 'reasons... is that'. Other structural issues include 'how garment production can affects' and 'people tries'. While the complex structures show ambition, the frequency of basic grammatical errors means the response cannot reach Band 7, fitting comfortably at Band 5.5 or 6.0; given the successful communication of ideas, a 6.0 is awarded.
