Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this contemporary era, in certain areas of the world, individuals have become inclined towards purchasing a large number of clothes. The reasons behind this trend include the advancement of the clothing industry and social media influence. However, people can diminish their clothes purchases by using that money on other necessary areas as well as customizing their outfits using old clothes. This essay will explore the reasons behind this trend with possible solutions.

To begin with, in the cutting-edge era, the textile industry has revolutionized throughout the world. Consequently, people have remarkable accessibility to and choices for attire. A wide variety of clothes attracts the public to buy more. Furthermore, social media is a ubiquitous development. The young generation prefers to adopt their favorite influencers' lifestyles. They follow them and could be encouraged to wear different outfits even though they have clothes. As a result, they buy new clothes. For example, in India, residents wear different outfits in several events such as festivals and weddings. Most of them do not prefer to wear those clothes a second time.

Nevertheless, there are certain ways that should be adopted by the people to reduce clothes shopping. The prime solution is to use the money on other necessary items, which helps them to be responsible and valuable persons in this community. For instance, people can invest funding in their higher education, donate to old-age homes and orphanages, and on their health. Secondly, individuals can customize their outfits by altering old clothes, which is not only saves money but also provides a new outfit.

To sum up, as there is more access and choices in clothes due to the advancement in the clothing industry, people tend to buy a variety of outfits, which could be a negative development. To overcome this issue, people can invest appropriate money in crucial areas or things rather than on physical appearances.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying clear reasons for excessive clothing purchases (the advancement of the textile industry and social media influence) and proposing logical solutions (re-allocating funds to necessary areas and customizing old clothes). The position is clear throughout the essay. The ideas are supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of residents in India wearing different outfits for festivals and weddings. The development is appropriate for a General Training Task 2, maintaining a well-focused approach from the introduction through to the conclusion, thereby aligning closely with the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation with a discernible progression throughout. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, two body paragraphs covering reasons and solutions, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', and 'Nevertheless' are employed to guide the reader through the arguments. Although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or formulaic, overall referencing and paragraph-level cohesion are managed well, fully satisfying the requirements for Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow flexibility and precision, utilizing less common items such as 'contemporary era', 'ubiquitous development', and 'customizing their outfits'. There are occasional slight inaccuracies in collocation or word choice, such as 'diminish their clothes purchases' rather than 'reduce clothing consumption', and 'invest funding in their higher education... and on their health' (preposition misuse). However, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and communication is never impeded, fitting the Band 6.5 to 7 profile, solidly meriting a Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional elements and relative clauses ('who', 'which'). There are a few grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, such as 'which is not only saves money' (extra 'is') and minor prepositional lapses like 'on other necessary areas'. Despite these recurrent minor errors, the majority of sentences are constructed correctly, and meaning remains clear throughout. The grammatical control is solid, matching the standard expected for a Band 6.5.
