Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is an undeniable fact that people have become increasingly materialistic over the past few decades and are urged to purchase fashionable clothes in large quantities, even when not needed. This essay will delve into the reasons behind this ongoing phenomenon and provide ways to alleviate this culture.
Fashion is exponentially spreading in multiple parts of the globe, influencing masses to consider it as a necessity. In order to look attractive and maintain a high status in this consumerist society, people indulge in frequently buying clothes even if they have to use thier future savings. What is more, the multinational companies gain high profits from this use-and-throw culture, therefore, the attractive advertisements promoted by them create a hype in the audience, especially
the youth, to purchase these unnecessary outerwears. Another fact that cannot be neglected is that young generations feel boredm from regularly wearing the similar outfit everyday. Hence, they go for shopping more often as compared to others.
Given the excessive wastage of valuable money in shopping of clothes by all age groups, it is vital to spread awareness to reduce this habit. Not only that finance can be used in fulfilling other essentail needs, but also it give rise to high rise mountains of waste at dumping sites. Most of the clothes are at present made of Polyester an Nylon, which are extremely hazarduous for the environment. Thus, such products should be bought in less quantity and worn till they become torn or rough. Moreover, customers should be inclined towards searching for quality not quantity. Neither this will end up in expenditure of excess money nor it will degrade the surroundings by reusing the good quality clothes.
In conclusion, I reiterate that the trend of purchasing excessive clothes has become common in this fashionable world due to several reasons. This problem can be mitigated by enlightening people towards its harmful causes to the nature and shifting the focus towards quality rathre than quantity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the task, examining both the reasons for excessive clothing purchases—such as the desire for high status, aggressive multinational advertising, and boredom among the youth—and suggesting practical solutions, including spreading environmental awareness and shifting towards buying higher quality items. The position is clear throughout the essay, and ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples and explanations, such as the mention of synthetic materials like polyester and nylon causing environmental damage. The essay successfully meets all the requirements of the prompt with good depth and clear elaboration.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the introduction to the causes, solutions, and finally a succinct conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect ideas, such as 'What is more', 'Another fact that cannot be neglected', and 'Thus'. Paragraphing is used appropriately and sufficiently to structure the response. However, there are minor issues with referencing and cohesion, such as the phrasing 'the similar outfit everyday', which prevent the essay from achieving a higher band. Overall, the flow of information is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'materialistic', 'consumerist society', 'alleviate this culture', and 'hazarduous' (though misspelled). Words like 'exponentially', 'multinational', and 'expenditure' show a flexible range. However, there are some word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'thier', 'boredm', 'similar outfit everyday' instead of 'the same outfit every day', and spelling errors like 'hazarduous' and 'rathre'. These minor slips do not impede communication, placing the vocabulary firmly in the band 6.5 to 7 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating control over clauses, conditional elements, and relative structures (e.g., 'even if they have to use thier future savings' and 'Not only that finance can be used...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, alongside a few grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'boredm from regularly wearing the similar outfit' and the awkward correlative structure 'Neither this will end up... nor it will degrade'. Punctuation is generally sound, and errors do not impede communication, making this a solid performance for grammar.
