Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the task, discussing the reasons why people buy many clothes (such as showing wealth, boosting confidence, and seeking emotional happiness) and suggesting solutions like budgeting. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, although some points, such as the interview example, are a bit repetitive and conversational. The position is clear throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas tends to rely on general statements rather than deeper extension, placing the response solidly in the Band 6 category. To reach a higher band, the student should provide more elaborated, insightful examples and fully flesh out the arguments without relying on superficial repetition.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into four logical paragraphs: an introduction, two body paragraphs covering reasons and solutions respectively, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'To begin with', 'Second', 'Furthermore', and 'In a nutshell'. However, some cohesive links and referencing feel somewhat mechanical or repetitive, and paragraph internal progression can be slightly disjointed. For instance, the transition into the solution paragraph is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately overall. This performance aligns with the Band 6 descriptor, where the essay has a coherent overall arrangement but contains faults in referencing and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'plethora', 'branded clothes', and 'purchasing of clothes'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'Nowdays' instead of nowadays, 'live' instead of life, 'individuals buying' lacking an auxiliary verb, 'plethors' for plethora, 'specfic' for specific, and 'weraing' for wearing. These errors indicate a lack of precision, though they do not impede overall communication. Because the vocabulary range is sufficient but marred by frequent lexical and spelling inaccuracies, a Band 5.5 or Band 6 is appropriate; given that meaning remains clear, a Band 6 is awarded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, such as missing auxiliary verbs in 'individuals buying too many clothes', tense inconsistencies like 'people are going for the interview and they wearing', preposition errors, and frequent spelling slips. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but sentence structures often falter when attempting complexity. Because the errors occur frequently and cause some distraction for the reader, the writing fits the Band 5 descriptors well, although the presence of a few successful complex structures prevents a lower score.
