Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying reasons for excessive clothes shopping, such as fashion trends, impulsive buying, and the easy availability of online platforms. It also suggests solutions, including budgeting, government campaigns, and the use of Artificial Intelligence by retailers. The position is clear throughout the essay, and the main ideas are relevant and supported with explanations. However, the development of some ideas tends to be brief, preventing it from reaching a higher band. For instance, the discussion on impulsive shopping and fashion could have been extended with more concrete real-world examples. Despite this, all task requirements are covered adequately, placing the response solidly in Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each body paragraph dedicated to a distinct aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Additionally'. However, there are instances of faulty referencing and slightly mechanical cohesion, such as 'Moreover, other reason is impulsive shopping' missing an article, and 'to control it' in the conclusion lacking a precise antecedent. Overall, the logical structure is clear, but cohesion requires more natural flexibility for a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'shopaholics', 'impulsively', 'wardroves', and 'colour theory'. There are some successful attempts at less common vocabulary, but also noticeable word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'explaning' instead of explaining, 'wardroves' instead of wardrobes, and 'other reason' instead of another reason. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a Band 6 level where vocabulary control is sometimes inconsistent. To improve, the student should focus on precision in word choice, correct spelling, and more natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to use dependent clauses and modal verbs, such as 'Buyers basically purchase new clothes when they admire others' and 'the government can run campaigns where they can make people understand'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, such as 'when to buy something new' instead of buying something new, and 'It is not only help' instead of Not only does it help. Punctuation errors are also present, such as a missing space after a period. The frequency of these errors places the grammar score at Band 6, as they occasionally distract the reader.
