In some parts of the world, people buy far too many clothes.
What are the reasons for this?
How can people be persuaded to reduce the number of clothes they buy?Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
People who live in some regions of the world purchase so many clothing. One of the major reasons is that shopping makes individuals happy. Also, some people want to wear the latest trends and fashions. So they are buying new garments in each and every season. The governments should persuade their citizens to reduce the usage of clothes by stating environmental factors and child labour.
Many people go shopping as a habit to make them feel happy and to escape from with their busy life. Especially, women love to purchase new clothes. As an example, clothing shops mainly target women and they keep women’s clothing in front of their stores. Additionally, teenagers and the younger generation prefer to buy trending styles or designer clothes. So they buy clothes occasionally. For instance, in North America, China, South Korea and Japan people buy new designer clothes every season and donate used clothes.
This practice has a negative side. Therefore, the governments or authorities should be able to persuade their community by explaining environmental harm that occurs from high garment production. For example, gas released by garment manufacturing factories badly affects the environment. Further, some factories are using child labour to produce clothing at a low price. Thus, the authorities should make people aware of these incidents. For instance, child labour is more popular in Bangladesh.
In conclusion, in some countries people purchase too many garments because it makes them happy and some of them like to follow latest styles and trends. This practice badly affects the environment and children in some parts of the world. Hence, relevant authorities should persuade people to reduce the number of clothing they buy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the task by outlining the reasons why people buy too many clothes, such as seeking happiness or following fashion trends, and suggesting ways authorities can persuade citizens to reduce this consumption through environmental awareness and highlighting child labour. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. However, some of the ideas are somewhat generalized and could be further extended with deeper explanations or more robust examples. For instance, the mention of child labour in Bangladesh is relevant, but the link back to how this specifically persuades individuals to change purchasing habits is slightly underdeveloped. Overall, all parts of the prompt are covered, fitting comfortably into the Band 6 descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from reasons for buying clothes to the negative impacts and potential solutions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as individual motivations versus governmental intervention. Cohesive devices are employed, including transition words like 'Additionally', 'For instance', and 'Thus'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'For instance' and 'As an example' to introduce supporting points. Furthermore, the sentence 'To escape from with their busy life' contains a minor cohesive or grammatical awkwardness. On balance, the organization is clear and easy to follow, supporting a Band 6 rating.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their main points about fashion, shopping habits, and environmental concerns effectively. The response features some less common vocabulary items and phrases, such as 'latest trends and fashions', 'garment manufacturing factories', and 'child labour'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text. For example, the student writes 'purchase so many clothing' instead of 'so much clothing' or 'so many clothes', and 'buy clothes occasionally' where 'frequently' or 'seasonally' was likely intended. Additionally, phrases like 'gas released' could be more precisely rendered as 'greenhouse gas emissions'. These errors do not impede communication, placing the lexical performance at a solid Band 6 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, utilizing conditional or causal clauses such as 'So they are buying new garments' and 'when the authorities should be able to persuade their community by explaining environmental harm'. There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing choices that recur. Examples include 'escape from with their busy life' (unnecessary preposition 'with'), 'governments or authorities should be able to persuade' (modal/tense misuse), and article omissions or pluralization issues like 'so many clothing'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication, and the writer maintains a reasonable level of control over basic sentence construction, aligning well with the criteria for Band 6.
