Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the task: the reasons why people buy too many clothes and how they can be persuaded to reduce this habit. The ideas presented are relevant, identifying factors such as social media influence, role models, and peer pressure, and suggesting solutions like parental guidance and lifestyle changes. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and lacks depth or specific supporting evidence. For instance, the example of the singer in a golden jacket is briefly mentioned but not fully linked to a broader argument. Furthermore, some of the reasoning is slightly underdeveloped, such as the transition into economic impacts. Because all parts of the prompt are addressed with a clear position and recognizable ideas, the response aligns best with a Band 5.5 to 6.0 descriptor, safely earning a 5.5 due to under-development in supporting examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays a basic overall progression, utilizing paragraphing to separate the introduction, body points, and conclusion. Basic cohesive devices are present, such as 'First of all', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion', which help structure the text. However, referencing and cohesion are at times mechanical or unclear. For instance, the pronoun 'they' in phrases like 'coping them and prefer to purchase the same artical' creates ambiguity regarding who is being referred to. Additionally, paragraph transitions lack smooth logical links, and some sentences feel disjointed. The management of cohesion is intermittent, fitting the Band 5 descriptor well, as there is a clear attempt at organization, but the execution of cohesive devices is frequently faulty and repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases like 'role models', 'social media', and 'hand to mouth'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and inaccurate word choices throughout the text. Examples include 'coping them' instead of 'copying them', 'artical' instead of 'article', and 'live their life as a professional as compared to social'. Word forms are also misused, such as 'demanding' used in place of 'demand'. These errors occasionally cause slight strain for the reader, though communication is generally maintained. This lexical profile corresponds well with the Band 5 descriptors, where the vocabulary is minimally adequate but features frequent inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complexity frequently result in structural errors. Grammatical inaccuracies are common throughout the text, such as missing prepositions or incorrect verb forms in sentences like 'people spend a lot of money on the clothes' and 'they do no need or useful in the present'. Punctuation and subject-verb agreement also present issues, such as 'peoples' and 'one of the singer wear'. While the meaning can generally be parsed, the frequency of errors is high enough to cause difficulty for the reader at times. These characteristics place the response firmly in the Band 5 category, reflecting a limited range of structures and frequent grammatical mistakes.
