In some parts of the world, people buy far too many clothes.
What are the reasons for this?
How can people be persuaded to reduce the number of clothes they buy?Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many parts of the world, people purchase alot of clothes. I believe, people want to follow the new trend and try to be updated with the current fashion. The only way to control the ratios of purchasing clothes can be done by advertising.
I believe, people are more interest in showing themselves in proper clothing to get most of the attention in the society. People who like to show themselves in a unique way so they do not dress like commoners. So, they get the praise and popularity in the country irrespective of their knowledge and skills. For example, Rylander College, one of the top colleges in Toronto conducted a college festival and all the students were dressed like celebrities and showed up at the event which went viral last month.
I think people should be aware of the craziness of buying clothes in order to lower ratios. People would like to copy the attire of acters and celebrities and present themselves in the society to get the respect and pride. Every citizen should be engaged in some social activity for the country and should be made to learn new skills so they concentrate less on the fashion. For instance, Youth in some countries are made as a role models for the upcoming generations so they can follow the trend. When the young generation people come on and advertise on streets how education is important we can divert the rest of the citizens from buying clothes.
Overall, I would like to conclude that buying more clothes in most of the countries has been a common act. People are most likely to follow the latest fashion trends and are trying to buy more clothes. It can be reduced by diverting the people towards a new skill learning for building careers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons why people buy too many clothes, such as keeping up with fashion trends and wanting social attention, and suggesting solutions like advertising and education. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and occasionally repetitive. For instance, the discussion on social status and celebrities is raised multiple times without much new insight. The proposed solution regarding youth advertising on streets is slightly vague and tangential to reducing consumer consumption directly. The position is generally clear, but the ideas could be more fully extended and supported with stronger, more relevant examples to reach a higher band. Overall, it satisfies the basic requirements of the task adequately, aligning with the descriptors for Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, along with distinct paragraph breaks for each main body point. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, phrases like 'I believe' and 'I think' are overused to link sentences rather than more sophisticated cohesive devices. Referencing can also be slightly unclear, as seen in sentences like 'People who like to show themselves in a unique way so they do not dress like commoners. So, they get the praise...', which creates disjointed transitions. Paragraphing is present and attempts to separate reasons from solutions, though the internal progression within paragraphs occasionally stumbles. These features place the response firmly at Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'commoners', 'irrespective', and 'attire'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'alot' (instead of 'a lot'), 'ratios' (used inappropriately to mean 'amount' or 'volume'), and 'acters' (instead of 'actors'). There are also collocation issues, such as 'control the ratios of purchasing clothes'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they restrict the vocabulary score. The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but lacks the precision and flexibility required for Band 7.0, making Band 6.0 the most appropriate descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses ('When the young generation people come on and advertise...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, such as unnecessary comma usage ('I believe, people want...') and awkward phrasing ('Youth in some countries are made as a role models'). Subject-verb agreement and article usage also show occasional lapses, such as 'a role models'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains understandable and they rarely impede communication. The control of grammar is characteristic of Band 6.0, where simple structures are handled well, but complex attempts introduce regular mistakes.
