Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the task by identifying reasons for excessive clothing purchases, such as status symbols and social media influence, and suggesting ways people can be persuaded to reduce consumption, including government regulations and promoting simplicity. The position is clear throughout the essay. However, some ideas lack full extension and are slightly repetitive, which places the response within Band 6. For example, the arguments regarding social media and celebrities are introduced but not deeply elaborated with specific external examples beyond general assertions. Despite these limitations, all parts of the prompt are covered, and a relevant position is maintained.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with logical paragraphing. Each paragraph serves a clear purpose, moving from an introduction to causes, then solutions, and finally a brief conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the use of transition markers such as 'First,' and 'Second,' is rather formulaic, and phrases like 'Apart from it' and 'That is why,' feel slightly awkward. Additionally, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as 'they can show their wealth' where the antecedent is slightly unclear. Overall, the structural framework is clear enough to earn a Band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, enabling the student to communicate their ideas effectively. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'implement', 'regulations', and 'imitate', though these are accompanied by notable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'enogh' instead of enough, 'encorage' instead of encourage, 'younsters' instead of youngsters, 'senstive' instead of sensitive, 'allure' instead of lured, 'immitate' instead of imitate, 'Simplcity' instead of simplicity, and 'lifestyle'. These errors do not impede communication, but their frequency prevents the score from reaching a higher band, making Band 5.5 a fair reflection of the lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'Government can implement some rules and regulations on advertising, so that business can not upload too many advertisements on social media.' However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Notable errors include missing articles ('people spend too much time on the social media'), subject-verb agreement or voice issues ('they allure too quickly', 'There are numerous steps can be taken'), and awkward phrasing ('because we have to need in the future'). These persistent errors cap the grammatical score at Band 5.5.
