Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing the reasons why people buy too many clothes, such as the influence of social media and the desire for psychological satisfaction, and suggesting ways people can be persuaded to reduce their consumption, like adopting a minimalist lifestyle and properly washing clothes to make them last longer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and leans towards over-generalisation. For instance, the second solution regarding proper garment washing helps preserve clothes rather than directly persuading people to buy fewer items in the first place, representing a slight misinterpretation of the second prompt question. Nevertheless, a clear position is maintained throughout the essay. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors, as all parts of the task are addressed, but some ideas are under-developed or tangential.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, body paragraphs for reasons and solutions, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. Transitions like 'To begin with' and 'Furthemore' are used, but logical progression within paragraphs is occasionally disrupted by abrupt shifts in ideas. For example, moving directly from minimalist purchasing habits to garment washing instructions within the same paragraph feels disjointed. Additionally, referencing is not always clear, such as the pronoun use in 'This will prevent the fabric from damaging.' Despite these flaws, the text remains readable and coherent overall, fitting the Band 6 criteria for paragraphing and logical flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'minimalistic,' 'psychological satisfaction' (implied), and 'subsrcribers.' However, there are several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'subsrcribers,' 'thier,' 'leeds,' 'unnessasary,' 'accroding,' and 'purchase clothes' instead of 'purchasing clothes.' While these vocabulary errors and awkward collocations occur, they do not impede communication since the reader can easily grasp the intended meaning. This performance is characteristic of Band 6, where the writer demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range and attempts less common words alongside frequent mechanical spelling inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'Imagine when you wear a new dress, you have a fresh feeling...' However, there are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Nowadays society use to purchase'), missing articles ('social media' used without context, 'Build a habit'), and awkward phrasing ('take clothes' instead of 'buy clothes'). Despite these persistent errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede communication, as the core message remains understandable. This sits comfortably within Band 6, where simple and complex structures are mixed alongside frequent non-systematic errors that do not block overall comprehension.
