Student answer (Band 6.0)

People are purchasing too many clothes in some parts of the world. This is because modernization, fast fashion and social media. There are various ways to discourage the consumers not to buy too many clothes through social media, education and government.

The sales of clothing brands are more, because of fast fashion, varieties and easy availability. This is particularly true about new generation who want new clothes for every occasion. By doing this, they are creating huge pile up of clothes on the landfills. Also, celebrities and social media influencers influence the audience by showing new outfits and clothing hauls. In addition to this, the clothing stores offer discounts, promotion, and end of season sales which create huge chaos among customers to buy more clothes unnecessarily. Therefore, social media, latest trends, and stores discounts are mainly the reason behind shopping for clothes.

People can be encouraged not to buy too clothes through awareness campaigns by government and social media influencers. This can be done by uploading content related to stop buying excessive clothes causing harmful effects on environment by becoming waste on landfills. Similarly, government should put restrictions policies on the number of clothing stores in the shopping centres. If there are fewer number of stores the people are less likely pay attention in buying new clothes. Lastly, instead of throwing clothes, people can donate, reuse and recycle them in order to reduce wastage.

To conclude, indeed people are buying more clothes then ever before because of latest fashion trends, watching videos about clothing hauls and desire to wear new ones on every occasion. However, this can be minimize through education, government policies, and awareness about environment impact due to wastage from clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining the reasons why people buy excessive clothes, such as fast fashion, social media influencers, and store discounts, and offers practical solutions like awareness campaigns, government policies, and recycling. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, though some points, such as government restrictions on store numbers, could benefit from deeper explanation or more realistic examples. The position is clear throughout the essay. However, the introduction is quite brief and formulaic, lacking a fully extended overview. Overall, the response meets the criteria for Band 6.0 as it addresses all parts of the task, though certain ideas remain slightly under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from reasons in the first body paragraph to solutions in the second. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as causes versus preventative measures. Cohesive devices are employed, including transition markers like 'In addition to this', 'Similarly', and 'To conclude'. However, some cohesive links feel mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'By doing this, they are creating huge pile up of clothes on the landfills.' Furthermore, referencing is occasionally imprecise, as seen in phrases like 'not to buy too clothes'. Progression is evident, but the management of cohesion keeps the response firmly at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using topic-specific terms like 'fast fashion', 'clothing hauls', 'awareness campaigns', and 'landfills'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are occasionally marred by word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'pile up' instead of 'pile-up', 'stores discounts' instead of 'store discounts', and 'environment impact' instead of 'environmental impact'. Additionally, spelling and phrasing slips occur, such as 'then ever before' instead of 'than ever before'. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at conditional structures ('If there are fewer number of stores the people are less likely pay attention...') and relative clauses. However, grammatical errors are frequent throughout the text, including missing prepositions ('discourage the consumers not to buy'), missing verbs ('This is because modernization...'), subject-verb agreement issues ('there are fewer number of stores the people are less likely pay'), and comparative errors ('more clothes then ever'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the grammatical inaccuracies occasionally require the reader to re-read parts of sentences. These mixed structures and frequent errors place the essay securely at Band 5.5.
