Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying both the reasons for excessive clothing purchases and offering actionable solutions. The ideas are relevant and supported with explanations, such as the influence of online advertisements, social media influencers, and low-quality manufacturing. However, some arguments lack deeper elaboration. For instance, the point regarding low-quality materials is introduced effectively, but could have been expanded with a clearer link to how replacement cycles fuel consumerism. The position is maintained clearly throughout the response. According to the Band 7 descriptors, the prompt is fully addressed with clear positions and supported ideas, though a slight tendency to over-generalise keeps it at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression. Paragraphing is utilised appropriately, separating the introduction, reasons, solutions, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'To elaborate,' 'Furthermore,' 'Moreover,' and 'Firstly.' However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical or repetitive, and minor punctuation or structural disjointedness occurs near the end, where the concluding sentences spill over into disjointed clauses. Despite these minor issues, the overall arrangement is coherent and guides the reader successfully through the writer's arguments, aligning well with the requirements of a Band 6.5 or solid Band 7.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, attempting less common items such as 'extravagance,' 'luctrative' (lucrative), 'longevity,' and 'pedagogy.' However, there are several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'extravagance purchase' instead of 'extravagant purchases,' 'pile' instead of 'piles,' 'publised' instead of 'published,' 'cant not' instead of 'cannot,' 'despalyed' instead of 'displayed,' 'longitivity' instead of 'longevity,' 'edcutation' instead of 'education,' 'fianance' instead of 'finances,' 'althought' instead of 'although,' and 'amny' instead of 'many.' While these errors do not impede communication, their frequency prevents the score from reaching Band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent due to frequent errors, particularly with missing articles ('the consumerism', 'the mother nature'), incorrect prepositions ('spending behind'), subject-verb agreement issues ('what rae the solutions'), and spelling-related slips that spill into grammar. For example, 'government should amplify the stringent laws' contains an inappropriate verb choice for laws. Although the meaning remains understandable, the density of errors keeps the grammar score at Band 5.5, reflecting a performance straddling bands 5 and 6.
