IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some parts of the world, people buy far too many clothes.

What are the reasons for this?
How can people be persuaded to reduce the number of clothes they buy?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

`In this contemporary era, excess consumerism in clothing has been a commonly witnessed phenomenon. There are multiple driving factors for such upward trend and several ways to tackle this problem as well. I will discuss both causes and solutions in detail over subsequent paragraphs.

To commence with, many countries have diverse culture Due to that, there are many occasions that require individuals to dress up. In addition, these events have dress codes and people feel pressured not to repeat pieces worn from one event to another. To exemplify, many Indian weddings has 5 days festivities,where each day has different apperance requirement. Furthermore, there are new styles launching every day from designers to attract consumers and these buisnesses spent heavily on advertisement. Thus, individuals specially young generation get influenced by such and spend unnecessary money on new clothing.

To combat this matter, celebrities have grater impact on our communities , so they can promote wearing same clothing to different events. This way people would not buy new items for each occasions. For instance, Alia Bhatt who is a famous Indian actress wore her diwali outfit to movie promotion which sparked a controversy. However, it ended in a positive way as she empathized on importance of repeating cloths. Moreover, society should invest more in quality capsule wardrob so they can style peices and also can last longer.

To recapitulate, spending an excessive amount of money on clothing is detrimental, and those funds would be far better allocated toward more pressing needs or investments rather than fast fashion

Overall, the flow is smooth and the reader can easily follow the writer's line of thought.

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to the topic of consumerism and fashion, utilizing terms such as 'excess consumerism', 'driving factors', 'apparel requirement', and 'capsule wardrobe'. There are some spelling and word-choice inaccuracies, such as 'buisnesses', 'grater', 'diwali' (needs capitalization), and 'cloths' instead of 'clothes', but these do not impede communication. Less common lexical items are attempted with reasonable success, showing an awareness of appropriate academic and general training style.
