Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the reasons for buying too many clothes, such as weather conditions and changing fashion trends, and offering solutions like donation and sharing. The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of 'old money styled winter attires' and the practices in Indian and Chinese households. Although some points could be explored in greater depth to reach a higher band, the main requirements of the prompt are fully covered. Therefore, this performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors, as all parts are addressed with relevant, though slightly under-developed, ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas, starting each body paragraph with transitional phrases like 'Commencing with' and 'However'. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly faulty, as seen in awkward phrasing like 'Reasons and suggestions are illustated in the further paragraphs.' Referencing and substitution also occasionally lack smooth integration, which keeps the response within the Band 6 criteria. Progression is generally logical, but the connections between sentences could be more naturally managed for a higher score.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'breathable garments', 'wardrobs', and 'plathora'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'apparels', 'illustated', 'plathora' (plethora), and 'clothings' (clothing is generally uncountable). Despite these inaccuracies, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary remains minimally sufficient to convey the intended meaning, which reflects the characteristics of Band 5.5 to 6.0. Given the successful attempts at topic-specific terminology, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as 'instead of designing outfits for the winter people had been wearing winter jackets'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'Residents of several part of the globe', 'consequently leading persons to fill', and 'make undertand people'. Punctuation and article usage are also occasionally problematic. These errors reflect a mix of accurate and faulty complex structures, aligning closely with the descriptors for Band 5.5, rounded to Band 6.0 for overall comprehensibility.
