Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's modern society, the trend of purchasing clothes has increased significantly, and people spend a huge amount of money on clothes. This is mainly due to personal interest or being influenced by social media. However, this can be prevented by taking necessary precautions.

To begin with, social media nowadays has become a hub for various clothing brands such as Zara, Levi's, and Denim. These companies collaborate with different social media platforms and use advertisements to increase publicity and demand among consumers. As a result, such marketing strategies foster curiosity and interest in the public and encourage them to purchase clothes. Moreover, these companies often collaborate with celebrities and models to promote their brands; as these public figures have a large number of followers on social media, their endorsement can influence consumers to purchase these products. For instance, many people get influenced by celebrities' attire and design choices. As a result, it encourages them to purchase the exact clothing brand and invest their money in consuming various fashionable clothes.

However, this trend has a huge impact on the global economy, as manufacturers have to meet public demand. They introduce a wide range of fashionable clothes with various accessories and designs, such as golden buttons or silver collars. As a result, it leads to overconsumption of goods and resources and increasing difficulty for manufacturers to obtain the materials. Also, people often choose brand-named labels over local merchants; individuals often get distracted by looking at brands. In the end, they purchase the same attire at a high price, rather than buying the exact material from local consumers. For instance, clothing brands such as Denim purchase material from other merchants and sell the product at a brand price.

In conclusion, this trend can be prevented if people purchase a limited amount of clothing for their daily needs, thereby reducing unnecessary consumption and conserving global resources.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing reasons why people buy too many clothes, such as social media influence and celebrity endorsements. However, the second part of the prompt—how people can be persuaded to reduce their purchases—is only superficially addressed in the conclusion. Instead of explaining actionable ways to persuade individuals, the body paragraphs largely focus on the environmental and economic impacts of overconsumption. The position is somewhat unclear due to this shift in focus. Therefore, the response aligns best with Band 5, as the second task prompt is not fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a generally coherent overall arrangement with logical sequencing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate introduction, reasons, consequences, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'As a result', although some transitions are slightly repetitive. Referencing is mostly clear, but the logical flow between paragraphs weakens when shifting from reasons to the consequences of the fashion industry rather than focusing directly on persuasive measures. Overall, the essay meets the criteria for Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully using terms like 'overconsumption', 'collaborate', and 'endorsement'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, alongside minor inaccuracies in word choice or phrasing, such as 'brand-named labels' and 'buying the exact material from local consumers'. However, these lexical errors do not impede communication, allowing the student to secure a solid Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer successfully employs subordinate clauses and relative clauses, such as 'as these public figures have a large number of followers on social media'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, particularly in sentence structures involving cause and effect, but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout.
