Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, examining both the reasons why people buy excessive clothes and providing solutions. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The reasons are identified, such as companies introducing new collections and the influence of social media and fast fashion. The solutions are also relevant, including consumer education, choosing durable clothing, and providing incentives for recycling. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed and lack depth or fully realised specific examples. For instance, mentioning that schools run awareness programmes is a bit generic. Overall, the response meets the criteria for Band 6.5, but rounding to a whole band for IELTS scoring, it sits comfortably at Band 6.0 because some parts of the response, particularly the development of the reasons and examples, could be more fully explained and extended.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is divided into four logical paragraphs: an introduction, a body paragraph for reasons, a body paragraph for solutions, and a conclusion. There is a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'Examining the reasons for buying number of clothes, the most significant one is that...' and 'Alternatively, there are some preventive measures...'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the punctuation and transitional phrases are occasionally awkward, such as 'In other words, companies encouraging customers...' where a verb is missing, or 'Beside this'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but overall the flow can feel slightly choppy due to mechanical referencing errors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate to the topic, using phrases like 'environmental consequences', 'excessive clothing consumption', and 'sustainable choice'. There are also attempts at less common vocabulary items such as 'plethora', 'incentives', and 'preventive measures'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'In some area of the world', 'purchase huge number of clothes', and 'awareness problem for this problem' instead of 'awareness campaign'. Word forms are also sometimes inaccurate, as seen in 'people are influence of fast fashion'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they restrict the vocabulary score to Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate clauses such as '...companies regularly introduce a new collections... for attracting the customers' and '...consumers should be educated about environmental consequences...'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak with frequent errors. There are issues with subject-verb agreement and voice, such as 'people are influence of fast fashion', 'people should be learn and aware', and 'people should encourage to choose'. Additionally, article and pluralisation errors are common, such as 'a new collections' and 'huge number of clothes'. These errors occasionally cause strain for the reader, though the meaning remains recoverable, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptors.
