Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt only partially, which is reflected in the limited and under-developed ideas presented. While the writer attempts to discuss the reasons for buying too many clothes and how to reduce this behavior, the arguments remain vague and repetitive. For example, the reasons mentioned focus broadly on social media and global fashion trends without clear explanation or substantial supporting examples. Similarly, the proposed solutions, such as the government encouraging people to buy less, lack adequate extension and detail. The student's position is also not always clear throughout the essay, as the introduction mistakenly refers to examining 'the problems and solutions to buy many clothes' rather than addressing the specific questions asked in the prompt. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to ensure all parts of the task are fully covered with well-developed, extended ideas and specific supporting examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays some organization with clear paragraph breaks, but it lacks a clear overall progression. While an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion are present, the logical flow between ideas is frequently disrupted. Cohesive devices are often inadequate, inaccurate, or overused, such as the repetitive use of transitions like 'Moreover,' 'Thus,' and 'Consequently,' which do not always logically connect the sentences. Additionally, referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the writer's line of thought. For instance, sentences like 'One significant Government shold encourage people to buy less clothes' interrupt the natural progression of the argument. To achieve a higher score, the writer must ensure that ideas are logically sequenced with smoother, more natural transitions and clearer referencing throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, containing noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The student attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'consumerism' and 'implications,' but struggles with word choice, word form, and collocation. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and lexical inaccuracies, such as 'buying too many clothes has ignited numerous discussion,' 'people's buy clothes,' and 'colour and other things.' Furthermore, spelling errors such as 'bacame,' 'suppoerted,' 'demoonstrated,' 'challange,' 'shold,' and 'otherwiswe' detract from the overall quality of the writing. To improve in this area, the writer needs to expand their vocabulary range, pay closer attention to word forms and collocations, and carefully check their spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentence forms while attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that cause difficulty for the reader, including issues with verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and missing articles. Examples of these errors include 'this matter is particularly due to its impact,' 'people's buy number of clothes,' and 'in world people buy far too many clothes have led.' Punctuation is also weak, with missing commas and awkward clause boundaries. To reach a higher band, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with good control, and significantly reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors by ensuring accurate subject-verb agreement and proper use of verb tenses.
