IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some parts of the world, people buy far too many clothes.
What are the reasons for this?
How can people be persuaded to reduce the number of clothes they buy?Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
With the increase in consumerism there has been increase in the purchase of clothes. In some countries people have started shopping for clothes every week rather than every season change. I believe fashion brands are the main reason for the mass purchase of clothes.
Fashion brands and fashion newsletters have started introducing new trends very often. To keep up with these trends people start buying clothes. People have stopped looking at the previously owned clothes they have and in the pressure to wear latest trends they purchase more than what is required. The latest way to market these trends are though social media and influencers. Influencers with more followers can influence mass audience to start a trend. For example, when Drake wore a Gucci jacket at his concert in Milan, there were people waiting in line the next day to purchase this jacket.
I believe awareness should be spread to consumers about the over consumption of clothes. People should be educated about the environmental issues caused when they buy new clothes and discard the old ones. Many clothes are made from polyester and when it is disposed it can harm the soil. Large amounts of clothes are burned every year which can lead to greater carbon emissions. Government can keep a track on carbon emissions from every house and tax people on the basis of that. This can convience people to buy limited clothes per year.
If fashion brands act responsibily and not persuade people in buying more clothes whenever there is a change in trend and if government takes strict actions to restrict the amount of waste a family can produce per year then I believe we can reverse over consumption of clothes rapidly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your response addresses all parts of the task by identifying reasons for over-consumption, such as fashion trends and social media marketing, and suggesting practical solutions like consumer education and government policies. You maintain a clear position throughout the essay. Your ideas are generally extended and supported, such as when you give the specific example of Drake wearing a Gucci jacket. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in parts, such as stating that 'many clothes are made from polyester and when it is disposed it can harm the soil,' which shows the characteristics of this level where some supporting arguments could be more fully elaborated or nuanced. To reach a higher band, you would need to provide fully developed explanations and more thoroughly explored consequences for each of your points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You have structured your response into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing reasons and solutions respectively, and a clear conclusion. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'For example' and 'This can convince people,' though referencing and transition management are occasionally a bit mechanical. To move to a higher band, you could aim for even more flexible and unobtrusive referencing, ensuring that cohesive ties connect your ideas seamlessly without relying on standard formulas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to discuss consumerism and environmental issues with some precision. You make successful attempts at less common items, such as 'consumerism,' 'carbon emissions,' and 'over-consumption.' However, there are occasional lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as writing 'convience' instead of 'convince,' 'responsibily' instead of 'responsibly,' and stating that brands 'persuade people in buying' rather than 'persuade people to buy.' These errors do not impede communication, placing your vocabulary use firmly in this band. To achieve a higher score, you should work on spelling accuracy and mastering precise prepositional collocations associated with less common words.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating structures like conditional clauses ('If fashion brands act responsibly...') and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('with the increase in consumerism there has been increase...') and minor punctuation slips, but these errors rarely impede communication and you produce several error-free sentences. To reach the next level, you need to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures with consistently high accuracy, ensuring that article use and prepositional patterns inside grammatical structures remain error-free.
