Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by identifying the reasons why people buy excessive clothes and suggesting a viable solution, which places the content within the relevant requirements. However, some ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed, reflecting a partial rather than fully thorough treatment of the prompt. For example, while the writer mentions the desire to look attractive and lower prices as causes, the explanation relies on straightforward repetition rather than deep elaboration. Similarly, the solution of reusing and restyling old dresses is introduced, but its practical implementation is not fully explored. To move further up the scale, the writer would need to extend their ideas with more specific details or fully realised examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear overall arrangement and follows a logical four-paragraph structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, fulfilling the expectations of the band and demonstrating the beginnings of a higher level of organization. Information and ideas are generally coherent, and the progression of the essay is understandable. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as the recurring transitional phrases and referencing that lacks variety. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, but the management of cohesive devices across sentences could be smoother and more varied to achieve a more advanced flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and meets the minimum threshold for conveying simple ideas, successfully utilizing words related to shopping and fashion. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'reutilizing', 'overspending', and 'prominent solution', though these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word form and collocation, such as 'frequenlty' and 'resonable'. These lexical inaccuracies do not severely impede communication, but they restrict the precision and flexibility of the writing. Enhancing lexical range and ensuring correct word forms and spelling would significantly elevate the quality of expression.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on basic patterns with occasional attempts at complex sentences. These complex constructions are often faulty, featuring frequent errors in agreement, articles, and verb patterns. Examples include 'Nowadays, there has a popular trend', 'make people to buy', and 'major cause behind this trend is the people's wish'. While simple sentences are generally understandable, the frequency of grammatical errors in more ambitious structures causes some difficulty for the reader and prevents the writing from achieving a higher level of grammatical control.
