Student answer (Band 6.0)

It has been observed in some countries, that people are spending money on buying a lot of clothes. This is happening because people have too many choices and they want to look good. The best way to tackle this is to make them aware about where to spend. This essay will be delve both aspects in the subsequent paragraphs.

To begin with, nowadays, people are highly invested in their looks. Therefore, they keep on buying latest and trendy clothes even if they do not need them. This is because it makes them feel confident about themselves. Additionally, there are large varieties available at affordable prices and it is easily accessable too. For example, a lot of people buy online from websites such as Temu, which has clothing options starting from the range of five dollars. This means that they do not have to go anywhere or spend on travelling to a shopping centre. Hence, they save time and travelling expenses which gives them chance to spend more.

On the other hand, purchasing clothes more than what is needed can have negative impacts. It is necessary for people to be aware of what they need and they should purchase accordingly. For instance, if someone is buying recklessly and later on realize that they do not want to wear some of the clothes bought. It will be a waste of money for them. However, they can invest the same money wisely in other important areas like learning a skill, or buying a property.

To recapitulate, it is concluded that people do over spend when it comes to buying clothes. This happens because of their consciousness of looking good and the amount of options that are available to them. But this issue can be resolved to some extent if people learn to buy what they actually need and use their finances properly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the reasons why people buy excessive clothes and how they can be persuaded to reduce their purchases. However, the development of these ideas is uneven. While the causes are outlined with understandable points regarding personal confidence and affordable online platforms like Temu, the solutions section is somewhat brief and under-developed. Instead of deeply exploring actionable persuasion strategies, such as educational campaigns or policy changes, the student offers general advice that people should be aware of their needs. The position is clear throughout, but deeper extension of the supporting ideas and a more fully realised discussion on reduction methods are needed to reach the next level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a final summary. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the reasons and the solutions into distinct sections. However, the use of cohesive devices is at times mechanical or slightly repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on transitional phrases like 'To begin with' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional mechanical links prevent the flow from being entirely smooth. Moving up would require more varied and subtle cohesive relationships between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items and specific examples such as 'affordable prices', 'travelling expenses', and 'invest the same money wisely'. There are, however, some noticeable spelling and word choice errors that reflect the current band level, such as 'accessable' instead of accessible, and awkward phrasings like 'This essay will be delve both aspects'. These minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they highlight limitations in precision and lexical control. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to demonstrate more consistent accuracy in spelling and collocation when using sophisticated vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing features a workable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. There are, nevertheless, several grammatical and punctuation errors sprinkled throughout the text. Examples include fragment sentences and awkward verb patterns like 'This essay will be delve both aspects', missing articles, and slight prepositional slips. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the reader can easily follow the intended meaning. To reach a higher standard, the student must produce a greater frequency of error-free sentences and exercise tighter control over complex structures and verb forms.
