Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many countries, individuals buy apparels more than necessary. One of major reason is fast-fashion that brings trendy clothes each season, which people love to buy. They can be approached to alleviate this number physcologically to counter "outfit repeat" stigma.

People buy clothes majorly due to two reasons: firstly, their outfit needs repair. Secondly, the trend is completely changed, so they are no longer interested in wearing them. Despite having enough clothes, customers still buy new ones to keep their wardrobe up to date with the latest collection. Moreover, there are various fast-fashion brands, which provides affordable clothing options. For instance, brands like Zudio or Max in India, brings trendy outfit collection in every quarter and advertise them with the help of a popular celebrity, which encourages customer to buy the outfits. Furthermore, everyone wants to display their vast collection on the social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook for views and likes.

However, this creates a widespread belief in the society that repeating an outfit will turn into mockery by their followers. People think that they cannot repeat outfit otherwise they will negatively represent their image of being poor. It is an influential person's such as actors or content creators responsiblity to help people overcome this intimidating factor of repeating the outfit. They can post the pictures of themselves in their old outfit, which can reduce a normal person's anxiety who cannot afford to buy clothes on a regular basis. In addition, to reduce the number of clothes they buy, the government should incentivise people to repair them by reducing the cost or subsidise it, as the constant pressure of buy new clothes puts a financial strain especially on youngsters, which depletes people's saving.

In conclusion, while people spend heavily to collect trendy clothes owing to affordability provided by different fast-fashion brands, influential people and the government should shoulder responsibility to control these numbers by using distinct methods to clear any misbelief.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, examining both the reasons why people buy too many clothes and how they can be persuaded to reduce this consumption. The position is clear throughout, and the 8 words copied from the prompt were not counted. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, while the reasons regarding fast-fashion, affordability, and social media pressure are elaborated well with examples like Zudio and Max, the solutions—such as shifting responsibility to influencers and government subsidies for repairs—tend to be somewhat generalized and could benefit from deeper extension. This places the response solidly in the middle tier of achievement, successfully answering the prompt while leaving room for more thorough exploration of the proposed solutions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from causes to solutions and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different thematic points, such as the driving factors of fast-fashion in the second paragraph and the psychological stigma and solutions in the third. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, with some awkward transitional phrases like 'One of major reason' and repetitive referencing patterns. Furthermore, the internal logical flow within paragraphs occasionally stumbles, such as the abrupt shift in the second paragraph between reasons for buying clothes and the role of social media. These features align with the expectations of this band level, where logical structure is present but cohesive devices and referencing are not entirely seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts less common items such as 'alleviate', 'stigmatising', 'incentivise', and 'financial strain'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, word form, and collocation, such as 'apparels more than necessary' instead of 'apparel', 'physcologically' (spelling error), 'provides affordable' where subject-verb agreement fails, and 'outfit repeat stigma'. These lexical errors and awkward formations do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments easily, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. A more precise control of word forms and collocations is needed to elevate the lexical quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as relative clauses and conditional-like constructions. There are, however, several errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including article omissions and misuse ('One of major reason', 'bring trendy outfit collection'), pluralisation issues ('social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook'), and prepositional or structural awkwardness ('It is an influential person's such as actors or content creators responsiblity'). Despite these recurring errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic agreement, article usage, and complex sentence mechanics to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences.
