Student answer (Band 6.5)
In this modern world, it is quite trendy for people to buy a lot of clothes whether they need them or not. While buying unnecessary clothes does not only impact your savings, but also impact the environment. This essay will discuss the reasons along with solutions in the upcoming paragraphs.
To begin with, people buy clothes due to the influence of social media. Because advertising of brands is readily accessible through digital media and people buy clothes under the influence of famous people and celebrities. The other important factor is that some people believe in quantity over quality and they spend money buying numerous cheap clothes rather than spending money on a fewer but branded clothes which will use for years. Apart from this, many stores provide heavy discounts, which attracts customers to purchase clothes even if they do not need them.
However, there are number of solutions that can be used to reduce this trend. First of all, the government should poses a heavy tax on the making of cheap clothes as they are not environmentally friendly. For instance, in the making of a pair of jeans a lot of water is required, and the chemical that is used for the sustainability of the product is harsh for the skin as well. Furthermore, teachers and parents can educate kids about the quality over the quantity, because if they adopt these habits since adolescence they will not spend money excessively and buy random stuff in later on their life.
To conclude, people should not be influenced by social media easily and analyse their needs before buying anything, and if kids will grow up with adequate sense of knowledge they will not spend money on random clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both parts of the question and maintain a clear focus on excessive clothing purchases. The reasons are relevant: social-media influence, preference for quantity over quality, and discounts. Your proposed responses—taxing the production of cheap clothes and educating children—also answer how buying might be reduced. The explanation of water use and chemicals gives the tax idea some support, while the point about habits formed in childhood is relevant but less fully developed. To strengthen the response further, explain more directly how a production tax would change consumers’ buying behaviour, and extend the social-media or discount points with a specific example. This would make the ideas more consistently developed and supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, a paragraph on solutions, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “To conclude” help readers identify each stage of the argument. Within the causes paragraph, however, the opening explanation is fragmented: “Because advertising of brands is readily accessible…” is not a complete sentence, and the link between advertising and celebrity influence could be smoother. The conclusion also repeats the advice about social media and children rather than drawing the main causes and solutions together. Use linking phrases to show relationships between ideas, not only to announce paragraph stages, and make references between sentences more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “social media,” “heavy discounts,” “environmentally friendly,” and “quantity over quality.” These expressions make the main points clear, and you attempt some more specific language about clothing production. However, several choices are imprecise or awkward, such as “the making of cheap clothes,” “sustainability of the product,” and “random stuff.” There is also repetition of “buy clothes” and “spend money,” which limits flexibility. Choose more precise collocations—for example, describe the “production of low-cost garments” and “impulsive purchases”—and vary the language used for buying and consumption. These refinements would make the argument sound more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning with “While,” “Because,” and “if,” and the overall meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless affect accuracy. “While buying unnecessary clothes does not only impact your savings, but also impact the environment” has an awkward construction and inconsistent verb agreement; “there are number of solutions” needs an article; and “the government should poses” uses the wrong verb form after “should.” The sentence beginning “Because advertising…” is also a fragment, while “if kids will grow up” uses an unsuitable future form in the conditional. Review sentence completeness, subject–verb agreement, articles, and modal verb patterns. More accurate control of these structures would make your complex sentences clearer.
