Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary society, many people prefer to buy extra number of clothes, sometimes more than their requirements. There are several reasons behind this trend, such as keeping up with new fashion and new clothes for each occasions, multiple approaches can be adopted to persude them to reduce the number of clothes they buy.

There can be diverse number of reasons why people buy extra clothing items. Firstly, they want to keep up with the latest fashion. Nowadays, fashion trends are rapidly changing and people often like to wear the clothes according to the latest fashion. This keeps their wardrobe overwhelmed all the time as keep buying items as per changing fashion trends. Secondly, people prefer to buy new clothes for every occassion. For example, if someone's birthday or wedding is approaching, they prefer to buy new clothes instead of reusing the old ones. Similarly, different clothing options for different weathers is also a reason why people purchase extra number of clothes.

However, several approaches can be adopted at the personal and collective levels to persude people to reduce the shopping of clothes. On the collective level, authorities should run online and offline campaigns to bring the attention of people towards donating money to greater causes instead of wasting it on unnecessary clothes. The social funds or charitable organisations can prove beneficial to make people utilize their money differently. Futhermore, on individual level, person should spend this money on self grooming and development such as learning in-demand skills, which can help them professionally as well.

In conclusion, although people spend significant amount on nonessential clothes because of ever changing fashion trends and events, the idea of dedicating that money to pressing matters like charity or helping needy people can result in positive outcomes. If people were to contribute towards the society, they would need to spend the money on the clothing items carefully and utilize that money to help poor or self development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: changing fashion and buying new outfits for occasions or different weather are relevant reasons, and you suggest campaigns and redirecting spending towards charity or personal development. The response has a clear overall position, especially in the conclusion. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others. The fashion point is explained through changing trends, while the weather point is only briefly mentioned. The proposed campaigns are also not clearly connected to reducing purchases: encouraging donations or skills development may redirect money, but you could explain more directly how this would change clothing-buying habits. Add a specific example, such as promoting clothing swaps, repairing garments, or highlighting the environmental cost of fast fashion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on reasons, a paragraph on solutions, and a conclusion. Sequencing is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger progression. To make the organisation more fluent, avoid relying so heavily on formulaic transitions and make the links between ideas more explicit. For example, the sentence about different weather follows the occasion example but is not developed or linked to the main explanation. The conclusion also repeats the charity and self-development ideas rather than synthesising the proposed solutions. Clearer referencing and tighter links between each solution and its intended effect would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “latest fashion,” “wardrobe,” “charitable organisations,” and “in-demand skills,” so the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “collective levels” and “pressing matters.” However, word choice and collocation are sometimes inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision: “extra number of clothes,” “wardrobe overwhelmed,” and “reduce the shopping of clothes” do not sound natural in this context. Spelling errors such as “persude,” “occassion,” and “Futhermore” are noticeable. Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “buy more clothes than they need,” “a crowded wardrobe,” and “reduce clothing purchases,” and proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional construction in “If people were to contribute towards the society,” and most sentences communicate the intended meaning. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “for every occassion” needs an article before “occasion,” while “different clothing options for different weathers is also a reason” has a plural subject with a singular verb. The opening sentence also joins several ideas in a way that creates a run-on structure. In “as keep buying items,” the clause lacks a clear subject. Work on checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and complete clause structure, while retaining the variety of sentence patterns you already attempt.
