Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary society, a significant number of people are opt for buying clothes more than they need. It is also seen that many people find shopping satisfying and some shops to unwind. However, working people tend to shop more because they prefer not to repeat a dress more often. This essay will analyze what are the reasons for this and how to convence them to not buy beyond their need.

In recent years, it has been seen that a considerable number of shoppers tend to shop more. There can be a number of reasons for this. To begin with, a constantly change in fashion and new trends. Everyone wants to look attractive and up to date and for that they end up buying every thing that is in fashion and try to follow every trend. The rise in usage of social media, every second day a new trend is trending. For instance, last year in Pakistan, Farshi Shalwar was trending so every girl bought Farshi Shalwar as her Eid dress. In addition, this year ballon pants are trending so everyone is buying those. Another reason can be a rise in sale. A number of clothing companies announce sale for upto 50% on their product and many people think that it is a right time to buy clothes and end up buying more than their needs. To illustrate, after the corona virus outbreak, many company used sale as a tactic to attracts shopper. Online shopping is also one of the major reason, where a person purchases while sitting on his couch in a comfortable environment.

As a responsible member of the society, it is our duty to convence shopper to shop in a limit. Purchasing beyond a need is merely a waste of money. Furthermore, with change is fashion every second day, it is a foolishness to run after fashion or trend; in addition, instead of buying more and cheap clothes, a person should prefer quality over quantity. A person should also keep in mind that offering sale is a tactic to attract buyers.

From my perspective, it is advisable to spend in a mindful way and stop chasing the trends and fashion. One should not be a victim of inferiority complex by repeating the same clothes and instead one must be smart enough to re-style the same clothes in different ways and show his creativity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both questions and maintains a relevant position: changing trends, social media, sales and convenient online shopping are offered as reasons, while mindful spending, choosing quality and restyling existing clothes are proposed as ways to reduce purchases. The Pakistan examples make the discussion more concrete. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that working people shop more because they do not want to repeat outfits appears in the introduction but is not developed later. The suggestions also focus mainly on individual choices; explaining how these could persuade shoppers, or adding broader measures such as consumer education, would make the response more complete. Overall, the main ideas are relevant, though some are less fully developed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining causes, and two paragraphs presenting ways to respond and a concluding perspective. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “In addition,” and “Furthermore” help readers follow the discussion. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in linking examples to claims. At times, however, the connections are mechanical or unclear. The opening moves quickly from shopping as a way to unwind to working people avoiding repeated outfits, without showing how these points relate. The final two paragraphs also overlap in their advice about resisting trends. Grouping all proposed solutions together and using clearer references between claims and examples would strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is an adequate range for discussing the topic, including “up to date,” “social media,” “tactic,” “quality over quantity,” and “re-style.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the examples are generally understandable. The response also attempts more specific expressions, but some word choices, collocations and spelling are inaccurate or awkward, such as “convence,” “a rise in sale,” “ballon pants,” and “a foolishness to run after fashion.” Repeated use of “buying,” “trend” and “fashion” also limits variety. Aim for more natural combinations and precise forms—for example, “sales promotions” and “follow fashion trends”—and proofread spelling. These improvements would make the vocabulary more controlled and flexible while preserving the clear meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “where,” and “instead of.” Most meaning remains clear, and the writer can connect reasons with examples. However, some grammatical errors recur in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction. Examples include “people are opt for buying,” “a constantly change in fashion,” “many company used sale,” and “it is a foolishness.” The sentence beginning “The rise in usage of social media” is also incomplete as written. These errors do not usually prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy and make some sentences less natural. Review subject–verb agreement, countable nouns and article use, and check that each sentence has a complete main clause.
