In some parts of the world, people buy far too many clothes.
What are the reasons for this?
How can people be persuaded to reduce the number of clothes they buy?Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In different regions around the globe, people spend a considerable amount of money in buying new clothes. The key reason for purchasing clothing items frequently is to avoid repetition of clothes. However, this can be persuaded by focusing on quality buying over quantity.
Undoubtedly, people nowadays want to showcase themselves on social media, which also comes with wearing new clothes for every occasion. For instance, for attending a birthday and a wedding, people want to buy two different dresses just to avoid having similar public apprearence. Moreover, individuals are more willing to spend on newer products available in the market despite having amundance of clothes in their wardrobes. Therefore, they are buying clothes which are in trend without considering them if they are needed or not.
Conversely, this situation can be controlled by making people aware about the harmful impacts of high production and waste related to clothes. This can be done by running campaigns, advertisements and so on. New and torn clothes cause pollution which not only contaminates the enviornment but also impact living organisms. Furthermore, people should focus on buying quality products rather than spending money on numerous cheap items of clothing. This will not only reduce environmental pollution but will also be more durable. To illustrate, an expensive jacket can be worn for several years whereas people have to spend money every year when buying a cheap one.
In conclusion, individuals are more focused towards their apperrance which encourages them to buy new and trendy clothes. Nevertheless, people must be educated about its negative effects to the ecosystem. Along with this, individuals must shift their focus to buy good quality clothing rather than cheap number of items at a time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both parts of the question and maintain a clear overall position: social pressure and trends encourage frequent purchases, while awareness and choosing durable clothing could reduce them. The social-media explanation is relevant, and the example contrasting an expensive jacket with a cheap one helps illustrate your proposed solution. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, you mention buying separate outfits for birthdays and weddings, but could explain how expectations about appearing different drive repeated purchases. The solutions also focus mainly on campaigns and quality; another specific measure, such as clothing swaps or repairing garments, would broaden the response. The main ideas are relevant, but their development is uneven.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on reasons, a paragraph on solutions, and a conclusion. The progression from social-media pressure and trends to environmental awareness and durable purchases is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Therefore,” and “To illustrate” help signal relationships between ideas. At times, however, the connections feel mechanical or the reference is unclear. “However, this can be persuaded” does not clearly identify what “this” refers to, and “Conversely” is not the most suitable transition into solutions. The conclusion repeats the main points without adding much synthesis. Use more precise links between claims and examples, and make pronoun references explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “social media,” “in trend,” “high production,” “pollution,” and “durable.” These choices make the discussion understandable, and phrases such as “quality products rather than…numerous cheap items” communicate the central contrast. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision, including “showcase themselves,” “quality buying,” and “cheap number of items.” Spelling errors such as “apprearence,” “amundance,” “enviornment,” and “apperrance” are noticeable, although the intended meanings remain clear. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, use “keep up with fashion trends” and “buy fewer, higher-quality garments” to express your ideas more precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which not only contaminates the environment” and a comparison in the jacket example. Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the response shows some control of longer structures. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In “people want to buy two different dresses just to avoid having similar public appearance,” the article and construction need attention; “avoid wearing the same outfit in public” would be clearer. “This will not only reduce… but will also be more durable” has an unclear subject, since “this” appears to refer to buying quality products rather than the products themselves. There is also a missing space after “occasion.” Review sentence boundaries and ensure pronouns clearly refer to the intended noun.
