Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's consumer-driven society, excessive clothing purchases have become a growing concern in many parts of the globe. This essay will discuss the reasons behind this issue and suggest some ways to encourage people to buy fewer clothes.

To begin with, it is easy to understand why this happen in society. Firstly, due to the advancement in technology people can purchase clothes at anytime and anywhere. For instance, there are several online applications are available such as Amazon, SHEIN, H&M, Old Navy and so on. Secondly, sometimes people only purchase branded outfits to show their status and invest huge amount of money in shopping. Thirdly, lack of planning is also another reason because many people shop without checking what they already own and in some situation people purchase clothes for copying their friends or relatives style.

Moreover, there are several effective ways in which people can control this habit. The first and foremost way is to set a monthly budget which helps people avoid unnecessary spending. For example, people can set budget for clothing and try to avoid exceeding that limit. Moreover, people should buy clothes when they actually need it intead of influencing from socail media or friend circle. Despite it, they can also follow a 24-hour rule. As per this rule wait one day before buying any thing and in that way they can get a chance to think about it.

In the conclusion, excessive clothing purchases are mainly caused due to the accessability, social status and so on. People can improve this habit by awareness, responsible shopping and recycling.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the question and maintains a clear focus on excessive clothing purchases. It gives several relevant causes—easy online access, status-seeking, and poor planning—and offers practical measures such as budgeting and waiting before buying. The examples of shopping platforms and the 24-hour rule help make the points concrete. However, some ideas are less fully explained than others: the influence of friends is mentioned but not explored, and the final reference to awareness and recycling is not developed as a persuasive measure. To strengthen the response, explain how a proposed action would change buying behaviour and support each main point with a little more detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for causes and solutions, and a conclusion. The progression from reasons to ways of reducing purchases is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Moreover” guide the reader. At times, however, linking is mechanical or imprecise: “Despite it” does not clearly express the relationship between the preceding idea and the 24-hour rule, while “and so on” weakens the example list. The conclusion also introduces “recycling” without connecting it to the solutions discussed. Use transitions that show the exact relationship between ideas, and ensure the conclusion summarises the essay’s developed points.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for discussing consumer habits, and phrases such as “consumer-driven society,” “branded outfits,” and “unnecessary spending” show attempts to use topic-specific language. Meaning remains clear throughout. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however, including “invest huge amount of money in shopping,” “copying their friends or relatives style,” and “caused due to the accessability.” There are also spelling errors such as “intead,” “socail,” and “accessability.” These slips limit the precision and naturalness of the vocabulary. Aim for more accurate collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe people as “spending large sums on shopping” and refer to “accessibility” or “easy access to online shopping.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “because many people shop without checking what they already own” and a conditional example about setting a budget. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. Examples include “why this happen” instead of “why this happens,” “there are several online applications are available,” and “people should buy clothes when they actually need it,” where the verb form, sentence structure, and pronoun agreement need correction. The sentence beginning “As per this rule wait one day” also needs a clearer grammatical construction and punctuation. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and complete sentence patterns, while retaining the range of structures already attempted.
