In some parts of the world, people buy far too many clothes.
What are the reasons for this?
How can people be persuaded to reduce the number of clothes they buy?Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, buying unnecessary clothes is widely seen around the world. People are purchasing clothes more than their requirement. There are multiple reason behind this blind shopping of clothings.
The major reason to buy too many clothes is to be updated with the trends. These days, everyone wants to follow celebrities and their trends. People are actively watching social media advertisements that is set to create a new trend every day. So, after watching social media people thinks if they wont buy these trendy clothes then they might be left behind.
This behaviour of buying too many clothes may cause future catastrophe. However, there are ways where we can educate people by explaining them the science behind the production of these clothes. We need to spread awareness related to carbon waste and pollution that is happening because of fabric manufacturing. Leaders around the world should come together and take necessary decisions. Celebrities should come forward and normalize the repeat wear culture.
The involvement of influencers is must required if we want to reduce this clothes buying culture. Influencers play big role in it. For Example: My friend use to follow a social media influencer. Slowly and steadily he used to try doing things like him and then he started copying everything that influencer does. He started buying clothes every week just to match his star's clothing sense. Then I decided to give him a reality check that the influencer whom he is following gets clothes from sponsors and those clothes are not getting waste they donate it later to the needy peoples.
In conclusion, I would say that buying clothes is good if we are buying it when it is required. But, buying

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you identify trend-following and social-media influence as reasons for overbuying, then suggest awareness of clothing production’s environmental effects and promoting repeat wear. The example about your friend also supports the influence of online personalities. These are relevant ideas, but some are less fully developed than others. For instance, the point about celebrities and trends is explained, while the proposed role of leaders is only briefly mentioned, without specifying what decisions or measures they could take. The conclusion begins to restate your position but ends unfinished, so it does not provide a complete final summary. Develop each proposed solution with a clear explanation of how it would persuade consumers.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable overall structure, moving from the reason for overbuying to possible solutions, with paragraphs that generally group related ideas. Linking expressions such as “However,” “For Example,” and “In conclusion” help signal these stages. However, progression within the solutions section is not always smooth: awareness, government action, celebrity influence, and the personal example are introduced in quick succession, with limited explanation of how they connect. Some references are also unclear, such as “these clothes” and “it” in the discussion of donated clothing. The final paragraph is incomplete, which weakens the sense of closure. Use clearer links between each solution and its supporting explanation, and ensure the conclusion finishes the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “social media advertisements,” “carbon waste,” “pollution,” “fabric manufacturing,” and “repeat wear culture.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and “reality check” adds a natural expression to the personal example. There are also some inaccurate or awkward word choices and collocations, such as “blind shopping of clothings,” “future catastrophe,” and “the involvement of influencers is must required.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for more standard topic language and check word forms and collocations. For example, “excessive clothing consumption” is more precise than “blind shopping,” while “influencers are essential” expresses your point more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “if we want to reduce this clothes buying culture” and a relative clause in “the influencer whom he is following.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include subject–verb agreement in “everyone wants” followed by “people thinks,” the incorrect form “My friend use to follow,” and the unfinished final sentence, “But, buying.” There are also errors with articles and plurals, as in “play big role” and “needy peoples.” These issues show that greater control is needed even though the intended meaning is usually clear. Check agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence completion during revision.
