Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, buying clothes more than needed has become a widely discussed issue. People buy more clothes than required because of the heavy discounts and it can be avoided by spreading awareness about the pollution it cause. In my opinion, this trend cause more touble than its benefits.

To begin with, one major reason is that many brands give huge discounts and people get attracted towards it. This is because the discounts are available for a limited time and many do not want to miss the opportunity to grab those promotions. For example, during Christmas every popular brand provide upto 70% off which is not available during regular days so people wait for these discounts whole year and they purchase stuff more than they need. As a result, they spend more money and they do not wear those clothes for a longer period and they throw it. It increases land pollution.

Furthermore, a great solution to overcome is that governments should spread awareness about the harm it do to the environment. In other words, many campaigns should be organised by authorities to make people understand that they are wasting their hard earned money as well as they create more pollution because many clothes are not disposed completely and in long period they make the land infertile . For instance, some polyester clothes are hard to recycle and dispose so they remain in the garbage for a longer period. Therefore, it is necessary to inform people about these issues that comes with the trend of over buying things.

In conclusion, discounts are good until people do not buy things more than they need and they should focus on the environment friendly clothes that can be decomposed properly.. Overall, I believe that buying clothes is not a bad thing but one should keep the budget and requirement in mind.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the task and gives a clear overall view: discounts encourage overbuying, while awareness campaigns could discourage it. The Christmas-sale example makes the reason concrete, and the discussion of polyester waste supports the environmental solution. This meets the task well, but the two parts are not equally developed. The reasons paragraph focuses almost entirely on discounts, while the proposed solution is mainly to inform people; it could explain more specifically how campaigns would change buying habits or include another practical measure, such as repair, reuse, or limits on fast-fashion promotions. The conclusion adds a recommendation to choose decomposable clothing, but this is not developed in the main discussion. More explanation of how each idea works would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the reason and solution, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and examples are generally placed beside the points they support. Some links are mechanical or imprecise, however. “This is because” repeats the preceding explanation rather than adding a distinct step, and “Therefore” introduces a conclusion that largely restates the paragraph. In the final paragraph, the shift from discounts to environmentally friendly clothes and budgeting is abrupt because these suggestions have not been fully connected to the proposed awareness campaigns. Use clearer references and develop the relationship between each claim and its consequence to make cohesion more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for explaining the issue, and the response attempts relevant topic language such as “heavy discounts,” “land pollution,” “recycle,” and “environment.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, though the range is somewhat repetitive and several expressions are imprecise or unnatural. For example, “grab those promotions” is informal, “hard earned money” is not the most natural phrase in this context, and “clothes are hard to recycle and dispose” uses an awkward combination of verbs. There are also spelling errors, including “touble” and “upto,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and a slightly wider range of terms for consumption and waste, while checking spelling and choosing a consistent formal register.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses both simple sentences and longer structures, including cause-and-effect clauses and examples, so there is some variety. Meaning is generally clear, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction remain noticeable. Examples include “the pollution it cause,” “this trend cause,” “every popular brand provide,” and “the harm it do,” where the verb does not agree with its subject. In “many clothes are not disposed completely,” the passive construction is incomplete, and the final sentence has an awkwardly joined structure. Punctuation also needs attention, particularly the extra full stop at the end and spacing before punctuation. Review subject–verb agreement and practise checking each clause for a complete, correctly formed verb.
