Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to raise a complaint about disturbing loud noises late at night from the neighbour's flat.

I have rented this apartment two months ago. In starting everything was fine and going smooth as there were only 3 flats occupied on this floor. The problem started since the new neighbours arrived 3 weeks ago. They are fond of video games and play late night with loud noise. I work as IT coordinater in a school. So my work timings start in the morning for which I need to take a sound sleep. I am unable to wake up fresh in the morning which is affecting my performance at job. I requested several times already but they act ignorant in this regard.

I would like you to act immediately and issue a warning letter to them. Ask them to minimise the volume and respect other's boundaries. Living in this neighbourhood is fun but there are some ethical limitations which applied to all of us. I will be looking forward to your response and proper action on my complaint.

Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate complaint throughout. You identify when the issue began (“3 weeks ago”), explain its effect on your sleep and work performance, and request a specific response: a warning letter and a reduction in volume. The detail that you have already approached the neighbours also helps explain why you are contacting the agency. To strengthen the response further, develop the requested action slightly more precisely—for example, ask the agency to contact the tenants and ensure that quiet hours are observed. The comment that neighbourhood living is “fun” and the general reference to “ethical limitations” are less directly useful than a concise, practical request, but the purpose of the letter remains clear and complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a sensible progression: you introduce the complaint, explain its background and impact, and then state what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “So” and “I would like you to” make the main relationships between ideas understandable. The response also includes relevant supporting details, including your work schedule and previous attempts to speak to the neighbours. However, some connections are a little abrupt, particularly the move from the effect on your work to the neighbours’ response. The final comments about the neighbourhood and ethical limitations interrupt the practical closing. A more focused final paragraph and smoother links between cause, impact, and requested action would make the progression more consistently controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “disturbing loud noises,” “performance at job,” and “issue a warning letter.” However, several noticeable word-choice and collocation problems make the language less natural: “take a sound sleep,” “act ignorant,” and “ethical limitations” do not express the intended meanings idiomatically. There is also a spelling error in “coordinater.” These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the situation, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for standard complaint-letter expressions and check spelling and collocations; for instance, describe the noise as disrupting your sleep and say that the neighbours have ignored your requests.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple statements and attempts at more complex sentences, such as “I am unable to wake up fresh in the morning which is affecting my performance at job.” The overall meaning is clear, but errors in verb forms, articles, and sentence construction recur. For example, “I have rented this apartment two months ago” uses a present perfect form with a finished past-time expression; “In starting everything was fine” is not a well-formed opening clause; and “which applied to all of us” does not fit the present-time meaning. Some punctuation and clause-linking also need attention. Practise accurate past-tense forms for completed events and use shorter, clearly structured sentences when explaining the impact and your request.
