Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am bringing this under your attention the problem we have being facing from past few days. Ali my neighbour who studys in high school lives on the same floor of mine. Every night after 12am he plays video games on a high volume. Honestly, the sounds and voices makes it very noisy and distrubing.
Please be informed that our schedule is quiet busy and tiring. We work on shift bases and sleep is very essential for us. In contrast, my 1year old baby cannot sleep in the night because of the video games noise. Note that we have already raised our concerns to them.
I kindly request you to speak with your tenant and ask them to either lower his volume or stopping playing games in midnight.
I would be very grateful to you if you can take immediate action on our request.
Thanks,
Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three required points: it says the noise occurs “Every night after 12am,” explains that shift work and a one-year-old baby are affected, and asks the agency to speak with the neighbour and request lower volume or no late-night gaming. These details make the complaint relevant and give the agency a clear general understanding of the problem. However, the start of the problem is only described as “from past few days,” without a more precise indication of when it began, and the effects could be developed further—for example, by explaining how the lost sleep affects your work or daily routine. The requested action is clear, though it could be more specific, such as asking the agency to remind the tenant of quiet-hour rules. The tone is generally appropriate, but “Dear Sir” does not follow the requested opening.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the complaint, explains its impact, and then makes a request. Paragraphing helps separate these functions, and the sequence is easy to follow. You also use some linking and reference language, such as “In contrast” and “Note that,” to connect points. However, “In contrast” does not express the relationship between your work schedule and your baby’s sleep problem; “Also” or “Furthermore” would be more logical. The reference in “raised our concerns to them” is unclear because “them” could refer to the agency or the neighbour. The closing also combines “Thanks” and “Regards” awkwardly. More precise transitions and clearer references would make the cohesion more natural and flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “shift bases,” “essential,” “raised our concerns,” and “take immediate action.” The reader can understand the main message, but several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce precision and naturalness. For example, “bringing this under your attention” is not the usual expression; “bringing this to your attention” is more idiomatic. “On a high volume” and “video games noise” are also awkward combinations, while “studys” and “distrubing” are spelling errors. Some wording, such as “quiet busy and tiring,” is unclear. Aim for accurate, natural phrases such as “plays at a high volume” and “the noise from the games,” and proofread spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, such as “I would be very grateful to you if you can take immediate action,” and most of the message remains understandable. However, some grammatical errors affect accuracy. In “the problem we have being facing,” the verb form should be “have been facing”; “the sounds and voices makes” needs subject–verb agreement (“make”); and “ask them to either lower his volume or stopping” mixes verb forms, so use “lower … or stop.” The sentence about the baby would be clearer as “cannot sleep at night because of the noise from the video games.” There are also issues with articles and number in “my 1year old baby.” Greater control of verb forms, agreement, and parallel structures would improve accuracy.
