Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Madam,

I would like to address some issues am facing from neighbours is the loud noise. It starts two weeks ago when their guest arrives they had a party, I thought its for one day but from that day it continous they play very loud video games at night it is affecting me in every way. It makes easy task difficult like sleeping, relaxing and styding in my own home. Sometimes I have remote work at night but its difficult to focus on work if there is background noise that is affecting. I tried to talk with them and resolve the issue but they did not listen to me. I think it is not my place to talk with them anymore for this issue. So I want the agency to talk with them as soon as possible so that they will understand the issue. I think its better to give them warning.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: you say the problem began two weeks ago, explain that the noise disrupts sleep, relaxation, studying and remote work, and ask the agency to speak to the neighbours and issue a warning. The request is clear and relevant. The account of the beginning is somewhat unclear, however: “when their guest arrives they had a party” does not clearly explain whether the gaming started at the party or immediately afterwards. The effects are also listed rather than developed with a specific example, and the requested action could be more precise, such as asking the agency to remind the tenants of quiet hours. The letter therefore covers the task well, but some details need clearer explanation and support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The ideas follow a broadly sensible order: you introduce the complaint, describe its effects, explain that you tried speaking to the neighbours, and make a request. This gives the letter an overall structure. However, nearly the entire message is presented as one paragraph, so the stages of the complaint are not clearly separated. Several ideas are joined in long strings with commas, particularly the opening account and the description of the effects, which makes the progression harder to follow. The repeated use of “I think” also weakens the flow. Use separate paragraphs for the problem and its impact, then your attempted solution and request, and connect sentences more deliberately.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough relevant vocabulary to communicate the complaint, including “loud video games,” “background noise,” “focus on work,” and “give them warning.” These phrases make the situation understandable. However, the range is limited and some word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “issues am facing from neighbours,” “it continous,” and “easy task difficult.” Spelling errors such as “styding” and “continous” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise complaint-related language and check spelling and collocations. For example, you could describe the noise as “disruptive” and say it “makes it difficult to concentrate,” rather than relying on general phrases such as “affecting me in every way.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to combine ideas using clauses, as in “I thought its for one day but from that day…” and “I tried to talk with them and resolve the issue,” but control is inconsistent. Errors include the missing verb in “issues am facing,” the tense mismatch in “It starts two weeks ago,” and the unclear construction “when their guest arrives they had a party.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also weak: several complete ideas run together, and the final request would be clearer as a separate sentence. Most meaning can still be understood, but these recurring errors and the reliance on simple sentence patterns limit accuracy. Practise past-tense reporting and build shorter, correctly punctuated sentences alongside your longer ones.
