Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear sir or madam,
I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding neighbour plays loud video games at night. which is making hard to sleep and relax.
To begin with, this problem started two weeks ago. Since then, it has started, before them it was very peaceful living here. I have seen them they are always playing video games very loudly.
Therefore, This is disturbing my peaceful life. Because of this,I am not able to sleep properly, as I am working in morning shifts It gets very difficult to complete my sleep while this much noice coming from neigbhours.
In result, agency should take some action on them so they could stop loud noises at night. If this not work's I would like to change my flat if its possible. So I can live peacefully without any disturbance.
I would appriciate if you could look into this matter and take the necessary action . I hope to receive a positive response from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Khushpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three required points: you say the noise began “two weeks ago,” explain that it prevents you sleeping properly before morning shifts, and ask the agency to intervene, with moving flats as a fallback. The purpose and your dissatisfaction are clear, and the request is relevant. This meets the task well, though some details are less fully developed: “take some action” does not specify whether you want the agency to contact the neighbour, remind them of quiet hours, or investigate the noise. The account of the start is also slightly unclear in “Since then, it has started, before them it was very peaceful.” Clarifying the timeline and making the requested action more precise would make the letter more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a recognisable structure, with separate paragraphs for the timeline, the effect on you, and your request. The progression from describing the problem to asking for a solution is generally easy to follow, and the opening and closing suit a formal letter. However, some linking is mechanical or awkward: “To begin with,” “Therefore,” and “In result” do not always express the relationship between ideas accurately. The sentence beginning “Since then” also disrupts the timeline, while “Because of this” repeats the preceding connection. Use clearer transitions and connect related information in complete, logically ordered sentences. This would make the organisation smoother and the references between ideas more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main issue, including “loud video games,” “sleep properly,” “morning shifts,” and “necessary action.” The tone is mostly appropriate for a complaint to an agency. However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “express my concern regarding neighbour plays,” “peaceful life,” and “take some action on them.” Spelling errors in “noice,” “neigbhours,” and “appriciate” are noticeable, and “noise” is repeated without much variation. Choose more precise collocations, such as “the noise from my neighbour’s flat” and “contact the tenant about the disturbance,” and proofread spelling. These changes would make the message more fluent and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, for example, “Because of this, I am not able to sleep properly, as I am working in morning shifts.” The reader can generally understand your main points, but sentence boundaries and clause construction are often inaccurate. “I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding neighbour plays…” is missing a grammatical link, and “Since then, it has started, before them it was very peaceful living here” joins ideas unclearly. There are also errors in articles and verb forms, as in “in morning shifts” and “If this not work’s.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, including the lower-case opening and the full stop after “night.” Practise building accurate clauses and checking each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
