Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam
My name is Batuhan Gozuacik who living in the flat 16. I am writing to you to complain about my neighbour flat 17. There is a enormous issue between accommodations. They are making loud noises which is made me uncomfortable in my place since 2 weeks. When they start to playing the video games especially after 10 p.m they do not care anything just focus the other gamers what they said , there are an ongoing debate between the players.
I would try to informed to them to reduce high volume of the speakers but it did not worked it. For example, if someone required to sleep in my flat, they would not asleep until the gamers would stop it.
On the other hand, when i invited to my guests to dinner , we could not hear sometimes what we said it. Therefore, i would be grateful if you sent a notice letter for them.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Yours sincerely.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you identify the neighbour in flat 17, say the noise has been happening for two weeks, describe its effect on sleep and dinner with guests, and request that the agency send a notice. These details make the complaint relevant and give the reader a clear sense of the problem. The effects are particularly concrete, although the request is brief and could be more specific—for example, asking the agency to contact the neighbour and ensure quiet hours are respected. The opening also gives your flat number and purpose. To strengthen the letter further, explain more clearly when the gaming usually starts and develop the impact on your daily life. The main ideas are present, but some are less fully explained than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a recognisable structure: you introduce the complaint, describe the noise and its effects, then make a request and close politely. The sequence is generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “For example” and “Therefore” help connect details to your request. However, the first paragraph combines several points in a long, crowded sequence, and the link between the neighbour’s gaming and the “ongoing debate” is not entirely clear. “On the other hand” does not express a contrast here; a phrase such as “In addition” would better introduce the effect on your guests. Clearer paragraphing and more precise referencing would make the progression smoother and reduce the occasional mechanical feel of the connections.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “loud noises,” “reduce high volume,” “uncomfortable,” and “notice letter.” There are also attempts to express more specific ideas, such as the players’ ongoing debate and guests being unable to hear one another. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, including “an enormous issue between accommodations,” “focus the other gamers,” and “notice letter.” These choices sometimes make the reader pause to interpret your meaning, even though the overall message remains understandable. Aim for common, accurate complaint-letter phrases and check whether verbs naturally combine with their objects. More precise vocabulary would make the tone clearer and more professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional example about someone needing to sleep and a sentence explaining what happens when gaming begins. This shows some range, but control is inconsistent, and errors in verb forms and sentence construction can make parts difficult to read. For example, “who living” needs a finite verb, while “I would try to informed” and “it did not worked it” have faulty verb patterns. The sentence beginning “When they start to playing” also needs a corrected verb form, and “we could not hear sometimes what we said it” has an unclear clause structure. Practise forming clauses with accurate subject–verb patterns and use simpler sentence structures when a longer sentence becomes difficult to control.
