Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern regarding a apartment I rented last month from a housing agency. My neighbour also rented a flat from the same agency. Currently, I am facing few issues with my neighbour.

Firstly, I would like to mention that I am experiencing this issue since last week when Mr Jen shifted to my neighbouring apartment. I am working from home especialy during night time. On several occassions, I experienced that my neighbour plays a video games in a very loud noise.

Furthermore, the noise level from his flat distracted me from doing my daily tasks efficiently. Yesterday, I was not able to attend a formal meeting owing to the loud noise of video games which results in a strict action against me from my company.

Finally, I would therefore request that, the agency needs to notify Mr Jen not to create loud noise during night time. I will appreciate if agency would discuss the scenerio with my neighbour.

Your Faithfully,

King

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you identify when the problem began (“since last week”), explain its effect on your work, and ask the agency to speak to your neighbour. The example of missing a formal meeting gives the impact a clear, personal consequence. The request is also understandable, although it could be more specific—for example, asking the agency to remind the neighbour of quiet hours or to confirm what action will be taken. Some details are less fully developed: “I am working from home especially during night time” does not clearly explain why you work at night, and the consequence at work is mentioned without saying what the strict action was. The letter is relevant and purposeful, but fuller explanation of these points would make it more complete and convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce the complaint, explain its timing, describe its effect, and finish with a request. Paragraphing supports this progression, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Furthermore,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the points. However, these transitions feel somewhat mechanical, and the opening repeats that both you and your neighbour rent through the same agency without smoothly connecting this information to the complaint. Some references could also be clearer: “this issue” is broad, while “which results in a strict action” makes the relationship between the meeting and the consequence less easy to follow. Use more natural links between ideas and make each paragraph develop one point clearly; this would strengthen the flow while preserving the effective basic structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “express my concern,” “distracted me,” and “formal meeting,” so the main message is clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “owing to” and “notify.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “plays a video games in a very loud noise” and “create loud noise” do not express the idea idiomatically. Spelling errors such as “especialy,” “occassions,” and “scenerio” are noticeable, and “strict action” is vague in this context. Aim for accurate, natural phrases such as “plays video games at a high volume” and “disciplinary action,” and proofread spelling. This would make your vocabulary more precise and appropriate to a formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including “Yesterday, I was not able to attend a formal meeting owing to the loud noise…” and a relative clause beginning “which results…”. The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “a apartment” needs the correct article, “I am experiencing this issue since last week” uses an unsuitable tense pattern, and “I will appreciate if agency would discuss” has errors in the conditional construction and article use. There are also problems with plural forms and sentence punctuation, as in “a video games” and the comma after “request that.” Review articles, tense choices for situations that began in the past, and conditional requests. More consistently accurate sentences would improve control without requiring more complicated structures.
