IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter to express concern with the flat I rented from S&A accommodation agency. We have been experiencing very loud noise coming from our neighbor who rent their apartment recently to a family.
We have been facing this problem since one week. Initially, it was not bothersome enough to raise a concern, but recently it has started affecting my sleep. In the midnight, I have noticed children playing video games with a very loud speaker. As per the accommodation agency policy, it is not permitted.
Moreover, in a result of this, next day I have to leave early morning for my work and I have been getting late, since this problem has occurred. I would like to request S&A accommodation agency to provide verbal notice to neighbor to not to create noise in middle of the night and also, to tell children to play video games in daytime in our public games room.
I would be also available to help with necessary suggestions and if any steps need to be taken. Thank you for understanding.
Kind Regards,
Adam Smith

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all parts of the task: it identifies the problem, explains the impact, and proposes a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint. However, the development of ideas is slightly limited; for instance, the mention of the 'public games room' as a solution is a bit abrupt. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the impact is more detailed and the proposed solutions are presented with more formal phrasing. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the reader is fully informed of the situation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem from the proposed solution. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Initially' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between the impact of the noise and the request for action could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, and the letter maintains a consistent focus throughout, ensuring the reader can follow the argument without difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'bothersome' and 'accommodation agency'. However, there are minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'in a result of this' (should be 'as a result of this') and 'provide verbal notice to neighbor' (should be 'provide a verbal notice to the neighbors'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over idiomatic expressions and formal phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'since one week' (should be 'for one week'), 'in the midnight' (should be 'at midnight'), and 'to not to create' (should be 'not to create'). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the core message. To improve, focus on mastering time-related prepositions and the correct structure of negative infinitives.
