IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Anu,
I hope you are doing well. I am really excited to share a wonderful news with you. Last week, I moved to a new house in the downtown. It is a two-storey house which is absolutely bigger than my previous one. It is surrounded by a metro station, a grocery store and a mall, which is very convenient for me.
The main reason for moving to this house is that my job was very far away from my old house due to which I had to spend more than an hour to reach to my job. But this house is only five minutes away from my workplace which saves my time as well as the travel expenses.
I am very delighted after shifting here and can't wait to show you my new home. Why don't you come next weekend for an hour or two? Please shoot me a text if you are available to come or not. I will eagerly wait to hear back from you.
Kind regards,
Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task. You have clearly explained the move, provided reasons for the relocation, and included a natural invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a personal letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and easy to follow. To reach a higher band, ensure that you fully expand on the implications of your move, perhaps by mentioning how you feel about the new community or specific features of the house, which would add more depth to the content.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction, the explanation of the move, and the invitation. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'The main reason for', 'But', and 'which', which help the flow of information. However, the transition between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is coherent and easy to navigate for the reader.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'absolutely bigger', 'very convenient', and 'eagerly wait' are functional and clear. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and lacks the 'less common' items that would elevate the response to a higher band. For instance, 'wonderful news' is a good start, but 'exciting news' or 'thrilling update' might be more natural. Additionally, 'shifting here' is a common collocation, but 'settling in' would sound more sophisticated. Focus on using more precise adjectives and idiomatic expressions to improve your lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You correctly use relative clauses ('which is absolutely bigger', 'which is very convenient') and subordinating conjunctions ('due to which', 'as well as'). There are a few minor errors, such as 'a wonderful news' (news is uncountable) and 'in the downtown' (the 'the' is unnecessary here). Despite these minor slips, your grammar is generally accurate and does not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, to demonstrate greater control.
