IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Aman,

I hope you are in great spirits. Thank you very much for helping me a lot during my last visit to you. I don't have enough words to express my feelings that how happy i was when I saw you after such a long time.

I wasn't expecting that you planned a serprise party for me, espacially my favourite cake. Thank you for those winter jackets that you bought for me because I wasn't aware of the weather conditions of your city. The best part of my visit was that we spend quality time together, watched favourite movies, and attended best music concert.

Don't forget my birthday is around the corner, and I will be glad if you will come to my birthday party. We will go for shopping and at our favourite restaurant to enjoy their famous deserts.

Can't wait to see you again.

Your loved,

Gurpreet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses the requirements of a personal letter well. You have successfully thanked your friend for their hospitality, mentioned specific highlights like the surprise party and the jackets, and extended an invitation for your upcoming birthday. The tone is appropriate for a personal letter to a friend. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are developed with slightly more detail. For example, you could have elaborated on why the music concert was particularly memorable or provided more specific details about the shopping plans to further extend the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the past visit from the future invitation. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'The best part of my visit' and 'Don't forget', which help guide the reader. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, but the overall structure is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'in great spirits' and 'around the corner' are natural and appropriate. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'serprise' (surprise) and 'espacially' (especially), and a minor collocation error in 'Your loved' (should be 'Yours lovingly' or 'Your friend'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on accurate spelling and more precise word choices will help improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'how happy i was' (should be 'how happy I was') and 'we spend quality time' (should be 'we spent' to maintain past tense consistency). Additionally, 'if you will come' is slightly unnatural; 'if you could come' or 'if you come' would be better. While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause confusion for the reader. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring consistent tense usage will strengthen your writing.
