Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student has successfully covered all parts of the task prompt, adopting an appropriate semi-formal tone to enquire about a rental flat. The purpose of the letter is clear from the opening sentence, where the writer states, 'I am writing to ask about a flat that I saw advertised for rent.' The writer effectively requests key details regarding the flat's monthly rent, utility bills, deposit, rooms, bathrooms, and local amenities, as well as checking availability and arranging a viewing. Ideas are relevant and fully developed for a General Training Task 1 response, meeting the requirements of Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation with paragraphs dedicated to different sets of questions, such as costs, features, and the proposed viewing. Paragraphing is used appropriately throughout. Cohesive devices are used, though some transitions are a bit mechanical or missing, such as in the phrase 'Could you please give me some more information about the Flat and I also know about monthly rent'. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression is easy to follow, supporting a Band 6.5 score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a rental enquiry, including phrases like 'comfortable and quite place', 'monthly rent', 'advance deposit', and 'bus stops'. However, there are some spelling and word-choice errors, such as spelling 'quiet' as 'quite', and using 'utilized bill' instead of 'utility bills'. While less common lexical items are attempted, inaccuracies in collocation and word forms prevent a higher band, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am interested in renting it because I am looking for a comfortable and quite place to live.' There are several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including fragment sentences ('if there flat is still available, If you don't mind can i visit your flat before moving.') and capitalization issues ('i'). These errors occasionally impede smooth reading, though communication is not severely impaired, making Band 6.0 the most fitting score.
