IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this to make a complaint about the disturbance from my neighbor who plays video games loudly late at night.
My name is Sam Mistry, and I have rented a flat from your accomodation agency. My flat number is 541. Few days ago, my neighbor, who have rented his flat from your agency as well, has started to playing video games late night. These noises not only are loud but also very disturbing which is affecting me in many ways. Firstly, I am not able sleep properly for last few days. Furthermore, my exams are due next week and I really can not concentrate due to loud noise.
Therfore, I would like you to take some serious action against it. Either he can play games at other time or keep down the music if he is playing in the night.
I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Sam Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the task well. The purpose of the letter is clear from the opening, identifying both the problem (a noisy neighbor playing video games late at night) and the desired outcome (taking action and asking the neighbor to keep the music down). The student provides relevant supporting details, such as apartment numbers and the impact on upcoming exams, which adequately develops the response. The tone is appropriately formal for a complaint to an accommodation agency, and the conventions of letter-writing are successfully observed throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression. Information is introduced smoothly, moving from the greeting and self-introduction to the specific complaint, its consequences, and finally the requested action. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as the problem description versus the resolution request. Cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Therfore' are used to connect ideas, although 'Therfore' contains a minor spelling slip. Overall, the flow of the letter is easy to follow and meets the requirements of a well-structured formal complaint.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a formal complaint, such as 'disturbance', 'accommodation agency', and 'concentrate'. There are some lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'accomodation' (accommodation), 'has started to playing' (playing), and the typo 'Therfore' (Therefore). However, these vocabulary and spelling errors do not impede communication, and the writer successfully attempts less common phrases like 'take some serious action against it', showing sufficient flexibility for this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses ('who plays video games loudly') and conditional/consequential clauses ('if he is playing in the night'). There are several grammatical errors present, such as 'neighbor, who have rented' (has rented), 'started to playing' (playing), and 'not able sleep' (able to sleep). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though some awkward phrasing persists. These errors occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band, but they rarely impede overall understanding.
