IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this to make a complaint about the disturbance from my neighbor who plays video games loudly late at night.
My name is Sam Mistry, and I have rented a flat from your accommodation agency. My flat number is 541. A few days ago, my neighbor, who has rented his flat from your agency as well, has started playing video games late at night. These noises are not only loud but also very disturbing which is affecting me in many ways. Firstly, I am not able to sleep properly for the last few days. Furthermore, my exams are due next week and I really cannot concentrate due to the loud noise.
Therefore, I would like you to take some serious action against it. Either he can play games at another time or turn down the music if he is playing at the night.
I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Sam Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully satisfies the requirements of this formal complaint letter. You successfully cover all parts of the task by stating the purpose of the letter, clearly explaining the situation regarding your neighbor playing video games loudly late at night, detailing how this impacts your sleep and exam preparation, and outlining the desired action the accommodation agency should take. The tone is appropriately formal and consistent throughout, starting with 'Dear Sir or Madam' and ending with 'Yours faithfully'. All ideas are well-developed and relevant, creating a clear and purposeful response that completely fulfills the task prompt without any omissions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
Ideas are logically sequenced and easy to follow. The letter is structured into appropriate paragraphs, beginning with a clear introductory statement of purpose, followed by a body paragraph elaborating on the problem and its effects, and concluding with a call to action. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly' and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to sequence your supporting points. Referencing is clear throughout, and the progression of thought from the issue to its personal consequences and finally to the proposed solution is natural and well-managed.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate and appropriate for a formal complaint. You successfully incorporate less common vocabulary items and functional phrases such as 'accommodation agency', 'disturbing', and 'concentrate'. While the range of vocabulary is generally standard rather than advanced, it is handled with enough precision to convey your message clearly and without misunderstanding. There are no spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, demonstrating a solid command of everyday formal lexis.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms. You successfully employ complex structures, such as relative clauses ('my neighbor, who has rented his flat from your agency as well, has started...') and conditional ideas ('if he is playing at the night'). Most sentences are grammatically accurate, though there is a minor preposition slip ('at the night' instead of 'at night') and a slight tense awkwardness ('has rented ... has started'). However, these minor errors are infrequent and do not impede communication at all, reflecting a reliable level of grammatical control.
