IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Kim,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to let you know that I am coming to your city for a business trip and I am thinking of doing some sightseeing during my free time with you.

Our ABC company wants to open another location in your city. They want me to visit and arrange a meeting with clients. Afterward, to ensure the demand for our business there, we will start the process officially.

I will have some time during this trip, as I will stay in your city for a while after the meeting. So that it allows me to know their thoughts on our business. I need your help to visit different places where I can meet new people and also explore new places in your city.

I would like to invite you to my apartment for a reunion. It's been a long time, we haven't spent time together since you came here for your job. This is the time to recall all the memories with some snacks and drinks.

I am so excited to see you soon. Thank you for being such a great friend.

Your best friend,

Puneet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively covers all parts of the communicative task. You successfully greet your friend Kim, explain the purpose of your upcoming business trip regarding opening a new company location, request help with local sightseeing, and invite Kim to your apartment for a reunion. The tone is appropriate for an informal letter to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. The ideas are adequately supported and developed, such as mentioning the reunion and reminiscing about the past. Therefore, this fulfills the requirements well, matching a Band 7.0 profile.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, using standard informal letter conventions like 'Dear Kim' and 'Your best friend'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different topics, such as the business trip details, the request for sightseeing help, and the reunion invitation. However, some transitions between ideas feel slightly abrupt, such as moving from the business explanation directly into sightseeing. Cohesive devices are used, but referencing is occasionally a bit mechanical or unclear, such as in the sentence starting with 'So that it allows me...'. Overall progression is clear, supporting a Band 6.5 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'business trip', 'sightseeing', 'reunion', and 'clients'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but a few word choices and collocations are slightly unnatural or awkward, such as 'start the process officially' or 'recall all the memories'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and your lexical choices do not impede communication at all. This fits comfortably into the Band 6.0 descriptor range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

Your response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a decent command of grammar. For example, you use dependent clauses effectively in sentences like 'I am writing this letter to let you know that I am coming to your city...'. However, there are some grammatical inaccuracies and awkward structures, such as the sentence fragment 'So that it allows me to know their thoughts on our business' and the slight phrasing error in 'It's been a long time, we haven't spent time together'. Punctuation and grammar errors occur, but they rarely impede communication, justifying a Band 6.0 score.
