IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Hello John,

I hope you are doing well. I'm also doing well. I saw your advertisement in the newspaper regarding renting a flat, and it captured my attention. Firstly, I'm planning to rent a flat because I was recently promoted to assistant manager and transferred, and my new workplace is quite far from my house. Your flat will be suitable as my office is 7 km away from the flat, and several transport options are available. Secondly, I would like to know some information, such as what the rent would be and whether the utilities are included. Are there any separate charges for the parking? Is the gym or any other space for recreational activities available? I have some leisure time on weekends and am usually free in the evenings on weekdays. Can I book a visit to see the flat? I hope I will get the response soon.

Yours faithfully

Mamta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response covers all parts of the task well. You successfully adopt an appropriate semi-formal tone to write a letter to an acquaintance or potential landlord regarding an advertisement. You state the purpose of writing by mentioning that you saw the newspaper advertisement and explain why you need to rent a flat due to your recent promotion and transfer to a workplace 7 km away. Furthermore, you successfully raise multiple relevant inquiries regarding the flat, such as the rent, utility inclusion, parking charges, and recreational facilities like a gym, while also requesting to book a visit. The ideas are well-developed and fulfil all communicative functions required by the prompt, earning a solid band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You make effective use of sequencing cohesive devices such as 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' to structure your reasons and questions clearly. Paragraphing is adequate, although general letters often benefit from being broken into shorter paragraphs for different functions. Referencing is generally clear, as demonstrated by phrases like 'Your flat will be suitable' and 'what the rent would be'. While cohesion is functional and generally clear, it occasionally feels slightly mechanical in the way questions are clustered together without more nuanced transitional phrases, which keeps the coherence at this level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with a sufficient range to allow some flexibility and precision. You successfully incorporate less common items and workplace-related terms such as 'advertisement', 'promotion', 'assistant manager', and 'recreational activities'. However, there are some minor formulaic expressions, such as 'I'm also doing well' in response to the opening greeting, which sound a bit repetitive and unnatural in letter-writing contexts. Spelling and word choice are generally accurate, and communication is never impeded, demonstrating a secure control of everyday and semi-formal workplace vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You display a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms to convey your message. Examples of complex structures include 'I would like to know some information, such as what the rent would be and whether the utilities are included.' and 'Your flat will be suitable as my office is 7 km away from the flat, and several transport options are available.' Grammar and punctuation are handled with good control, and the majority of sentences are error-free. The occasional minor structural clunkiness does not impede communication in any way, showing that you can handle standard grammatical patterns reliably in a semi-formal context.
