IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Johan,

Hope you are doing well. So, here is something exciting to share with you that I recently shifted to a beautiful place.

As you know, I was having multiple issues with my previous residence. Because of the nearby industrial area, I had to suffer from a lot of noise pollution which was starting to cause me detrimental health problems.

In this new area, there are a plethora of facilities available and which can be enjoyed by people of all ages. The breathtaking view of this park is the main attraction of this area which brings me here.

I would be glad if you could visit my hometown so we could spend quality of time with each other. I am planning a party as well where we will invite our old friends also. It would be a great fun and will have some enthralling conversations.

Hope to meet you soon.

Take care,

Naveen

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully covers all the required bullet points of a General Training Task 1 letter to a friend. The purpose of the letter is clearly stated in the opening, explaining the recent move to a new place. The writer effectively details the problems with the previous residence, such as the nearby industrial area and noise pollution, and highlights the features of the new location, including the plethora of facilities and a park with a breathtaking view. Finally, the letter includes an appropriate invitation to visit and a plan for a party with old friends. The tone is consistently friendly, informal, and entirely suitable for the task. Ideas are well-developed and flow naturally from one point to the next, fulfilling all the requirements for a Band 7.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear and logical progression of ideas throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the greeting and news of the move, to the reasons for leaving the old place, the description of the new neighborhood, and finally the invitation. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different topics. Cohesive devices are generally well-managed, using linking words and phrases like 'As you know,' 'Because of,' and 'In this new area' to guide the reader. However, there is a minor mechanical error in cohesion within the third paragraph where the relative pronoun 'and' in 'there are a plethora of facilities available and which can be enjoyed' disrupts the flow slightly. Overall, organization is clear and logical, earning a solid Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, attempting less common items such as 'detrimental health problems,' 'plethora of facilities,' and 'enthralling conversations.' There is an awareness of style appropriate for a friendly letter. However, there are a few inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, 'shifted to a beautiful place' is slightly unnatural, as 'moved to a new house' or 'relocated' is more idiomatic. Additionally, phrases like 'a great fun' contain a minor grammatical error regarding article usage with uncountable nouns. Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is adequate to convey meaning effectively, fitting the criteria for a Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses such as 'which was starting to cause me detrimental health problems' and conditional structures like 'I would be glad if you could visit.' There are several error-free sentences, but a few grammatical inaccuracies persist. For example, the sentence 'So, here is something exciting to share with you that I recently shifted' sounds slightly awkward, and the phrase 'which can be enjoyed' in the third paragraph leaves the preceding relative clause dangling because of the unnecessary 'and'. Furthermore, 'spend quality of time' should be 'spend quality time'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the grammar score from reaching the higher bands, making a Band 6.5 appropriate.
