IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Singh,

I am writing to suggest some positive improvements that I believe would help attract more younge individuals.

Firstly, I believe converting conventional theory-based sports lessons into practical sports training would provide young people with an opportunity to improve their overall well-being. In addition, introducing cricket would be an effective way to take a break from their busy daily routines, and would attract the attention of young people.

I am certain that these improvements would be valuable to the club in several ways. They would provide individuals with an opportunity to participate in physical activity and improve their lifespan in a healthier way. Moreover, cricket can help them manage their stress and improve their mental well-being.

To promote the club, I would like to suggest offering a few activities without charge to those who will register the membership for the first time. The club can organize free health awareness campaigns highlighting the significance of sports activities and negative consequences of sedentary lifestyles for new members.

I sincerely hope you will take my recommendations into consideration. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my suggestions. I look forward to hearing your views on these proposals.

Yours sincerely,

Miral Khunt

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter clearly addresses the prompt by suggesting positive improvements to attract younger individuals to the club, proposing practical sports training, introducing cricket, and offering promotional activities like free trial sessions and health campaigns. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to Mr. Singh, and the purpose is maintained consistently throughout the text. Ideas are well developed and extended logically, such as explaining how cricket and health awareness campaigns will benefit both members and the club itself. The writer fulfills all communicative requirements of a General Training Task 1 letter, showing a clear purpose and well-supported proposals, which aligns well with the criteria for a Band 7.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the purpose of the letter to specific sports suggestions, the benefits of these proposals, and finally promotional strategies for new members. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'To promote the club' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text, although paragraphing could be slightly tighter in places. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall arrangement is coherent. This demonstrates the standard required for a Band 7.0 in Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, employing appropriate terms such as 'conventional theory-based sports lessons', 'sedentary lifestyles', and 'mental well-being'. There is an attempt to use less common lexical items, although there is a minor spelling slip in the first paragraph ('younge' instead of 'young'). Word choices are generally natural and appropriate for the context, though occasional minor inaccuracies prevent the response from reaching a higher band. The lexical resource displayed is consistent with a Band 7.0 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writer demonstrates a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentences, maintaining frequent error-free constructions. Examples include 'I am writing to suggest some positive improvements that I believe would help...' and 'The club can organize free health awareness campaigns highlighting the significance...'. Control over grammar and punctuation is generally good, with only minor lapses or awkward phrasings. Communication is never impeded by grammatical errors. This level of grammatical range and control comfortably meets the criteria for a Band 7.0.
